Ever since the Mavs took out the Spurs (why Ginobili, why) and eventually advanced past the Suns to the NBA finals, it seemed their level of iness rose at every level.

Of course, it starts with the owner - Mark Cuban. After the conclusion of the Western Conference finals, he could be seen or heard on practically every local and national media outlet taking congratulations, chronicling his road to wealth and the events that led to him becoming the owner of the Mavs. He went on talking about how he chose Avery as his coach and their road to success.

Then before the start of the NBA Finals, Josh Howard spouts off about Dwyane Wade "not being a good shooter". Wonder what he thinks now. Meanwhile Dirk Nowitzki is being praised and touted as the "REAL" league MVP.

Fast forward to the day between games 3 and 4 in Miami. Cuban is on David Letterman laughing and talking and cutting down Riley's style of coaching. He goes on to talk about how HE orchestrated changes to league rules, with the NBA office, to encourage more offense and basically open the game up to attract more fans. All the while, this guy is smiling and acting as though his team had already won the championship.

Meanwhile, the Mavs and their families and friends were "chillin" on South beach, soaking up the sun and enjoying the atmosphere in between games 3 and 4. This led to Avery having to move the team out of Miami and away from their families in an attempt to regain their focus prior to Game 5. After that game 5 loss, Cuban begins bullying and insulting the refs and the commish, claiming "your league is rigged" simply because he felt there were not enough calls in favor of his team. He then gets fined a quarter of a mil for his antics.

While they were busy being praised and adored by the media as the deeper, tougher, quicker team and the next NBA dynasty, the Heat "dialed in" and proceeded to slowly and methodically "outmuscle", "outphysical" and "outplay" them in the remaining four games en route to their first championship.

My point in all this is that it seemed as though there was an extreme level of iness that permeated both that team and that organization. They started celebrating too early - after Game 2 to be exact. Somehow the Mavs must have got it in their heads that this NBA Finals would be a cakewalk based on the outcome of games 1 & 2. Although, no team has ever been issued a trophy after just 2 games.

The Mavs and their fans can and moan all they want about officiating and blame everyone from David Stern to Bennett Salvatore for their failure. They were expected to win. Maybe they were supposed to win. The fact is they ran into a more experienced, more focused and more mature team with a superior superstar (Wade) and a superior coach (Riley) that knew how to win.

Now, they are left to ponder what they did wrong. Fortunately for them they have all summer in which to do so.

To quote someone else in this forum, the team that lives by the refs dies by the refs.

Mavs got past the Spurs with a lot of generous calls from the refs. They didn't seem to mind homerism THEN. Reality is, Dirk STILL got away with a lot of pushing, pulling, and extra steps agains the Heat. But the refs won't win you championships. You still have to play better, and adjust to the way the game is called - and they couldn't. So they lost. Bubye.

Yes, but don't the Heat rely on the same thing?

Wade does, but he's an agressive driver, he's gonna get a lot of calls. The Mavs heavily relied on officiating to bail them out-thats why I was so pissed. And when the officiating didn't help them, they choked.

The irony is hysterical. Mavs fan is doing what they accused Spurs fan of doing. In the Spurs series it was "refs don't decide games, players do"....in the finals it was "the NBA is against us".

Now I am waiting for the "well....at least we beat the Spurs" drivel. Yes hang your hat on that while still staring at the empty trophy case.

Well...at least we beat the Spurs?

. I don't like the ring of that. I think doing that and a buck will still get you a peanut butter sammich.

Really, it's all good. Those that put any conspiracies aside are very proud of our team and can't wait to scrap again next season. Any amount of ing or whining isn't going to bring the trophy back from Miami. It is what it is and that's fine with me.

    COULDN'T AGREE MORE!!!!

That is what I find so hysterical. I had been saying since our series that the
Mavs were always getting pulled across the finish line by the refs. Why the refs started to not do so in Game 3 I'm not quite sure.

See Mavs fans how it feels when you feel the game being taken from you and you feel there's nothing you can do about it? Frustrating, isn't it?

The officiating is screwed up in the NBA, something has to be done about it.

Why doesn't Cuban try something novel for once, maybe STFU and let his team concentrate on the game.

You can't tell me all the media attention and smack talking Cuban did distracted the team as a whole.

Senor, do me a favor and stop with the "why Ginobili, why?" okay. I am sure you loved the clutch 3 he hit before that play, and the fact that had he not played his ass off the Spurs would have still been down 20 at that point. I agree with what you wrote, but please lay off Manu.

    Looky here BigVee,

I don't want to turn this thread into a Manu debate, however I will say this. When someone makes a great play, we praise them in this forum. When they make a bonehead play, it must be pointed out also.

A bad play is a bad play. Manu made a terrible decision to foul Dirk in that situation when he had no chance in of blocking his shot. That play changed the potential outcome of the game and the series. I'm sure no one feels worse about it than he does.

This is not to indict Manu. Like everyone else, I'll ride and die with Manu - anytime, any game. Don't be so sensitive.
