Does anyone understand why everyone thinks he has the most "potential" and might be the only "superstar" in the draft? Also no one really thought of him in that way until the last 3 games of his collegiate career.

I posted this in the TT thread yesterday:

As a slightly psychotic, obsessive LSU fan, I will say that there are some striking similarities between Thomas and Stromile. They're about the same size, both with sometimes jaw-dropping athletic abilities.

The big difference, and why I think Thomas will be a much better pro, is at ude and work ethic. Stro was clearly better athletically than 99% of the people he faced in high school and college, and never seemed to really work all that hard. He was highly recruited and treated like basketball royalty from a very early age.

Thomas is the opposite - hardly recruited, signed on at the last minute at LSU when a scholly became available. He was shorter and smaller than he is now. He was also injured his entire freshman year with a neck problem. He busted his ass at LSU to improve all facets of his game, and I don't believe that will stop in the pros.

Lastly, i think some of you are shorting him a bit on the offensive end. Everyone remembers spectacular dunks and blocked shots, but he runs the floor very well, and has a decent jumper up to about 15'. Obviously he needs to extend his range and work in the post, but can't you say that about most of these guys in the draft? All you Aldridge fans need to remember that Thomas and Davis destroyed LA in the NCAA's.

Because the only guys in the draft with any real potential to be a star are Thomas and Bargnani, and almost nobody's seen Bargnani play.

Everyone knows guys like Morrison have a 0% chance of ever anchoring a playoff team. There's a chance (even if it's small) that Thomas might, so people grasp at that straw.

All you Aldridge fans need to remember that Thomas and Davis destroyed LA in the NCAA's.

What kind of accomplishment is that? Joseph Jones destroyed La every time they played too. And you can argue that Jones got the better of Thomas when they played as Thomas was in foul trouble the whole game.

Thomas is a great athlete but he will have a hard time making it in the NBA as a PF unless he develops a game like Diaw. To do that he needs to improve his ball handling and continue to improve his jumper. I think he can be a very good player but it will take a lot of work. The good news is he has the work ethic to get there.

I agree that 6-8 / 215 lbs with virtually zero perimeter skills makes it tough to picture him as a big time player in the NBA. Depends on how much strength he can add. I don't see him being a great SF in this league though.

Defensively, he can help a team. But we all say that about ANY LONG, QUICK, ATHELETIC FORWARD COMING OUT OF THE NCAA.


this guy is seriously no ing different, im a little dissapointed so many people deliberately set their chodes on fire just cuz he had some dunks against college zone defenses in the tournament.

He was not a lock down guy in college, and alot of those atheletic long guys that can become defensive forces need to work hard as to become good defenders...it doesn't happen over one draft night, yet you hear mariott's saying he's gonna be an immediate impactor.

You are correct - noah and horford destroyed TT in the SEC le game. Thomas just didn't dunk on teams that played zone in the NCAA tourny. He dunked on people like that all season long. His offensive game is better than most of you give him credit for.

I know you Texans hate Stromile - see below - don't take it out on TT. He's a better player and a much harder worker.

i think ty won't be a bust. i'm not sure i would say he will be the most successful of this weak draft but i would think he will be solid in the nba. i must admit he is explosive and quite fun to watch.

It's almost always a path to failure to try to transiiton into the NBA at a position you are too small for. Athleticism won't get it done. The only REAL good undersized PF to come out in recent history was Brand, and he played for a major program with an outstanding coach. He was ready, skill-wise, as well as athletically. This kid is going to eat a lot of leather if his only offense is a dunk.

Not to say the money can't get to him, but TT busted his ass for two years at LSU. He still needs to gain weight, but he was significantly weaker than he is now when he arrived on campus. Despite what some on here claim, his offensive game contains more than just dunking on people - that's just what the horns remember because that's what it seemed like to them.

He can knock down the 15' jumper all day, and is a pretty good finisher around the rim, even when not dunking. I am not saying he will be anything other than a solid to slightly above average player in the NBA - but he has the athletic potential to be more than that.

The NBA is evolving into a more athletic league, so players of his mold have a chance now.

I don't think anyone here thought 6'8, 215 lb Boris Diaw would be a real player when he was in Atlanta. But look at him now, playing upfront in Phoenix.

TThomas should be able to do well in the league. They can use him at either forward spot depending on matchups. He'll probably gain a little weight too. A few years ago he was only 180, right?

Thomas has been working out in Orlando in the run-up to the draft, and has had some jaw-dropping workouts -- including one in which, after working for 45 minutes, he made 15-for-25 on 3-pointers. He has bulked up and has shown a smooth midrange shooting stroke.

Yeah - when he started at LSU he was about 6'6" or so, about 180-190 lbs, and projected as a 2 or a 3. He had a growth spurt and hit the weights.
