Wonder if this has anything to do with the moves being made now or rather lack of moves that appear to be to free up space in 2008.

Maybe the Spurs just have the foresight to open capspace if Duncan leaves!

That would be beyond stupid. No one will ever come to the Spurs without a guy like Tim around. I love San Antonio and my heart will always be there, but it's not a big city like LA, NY, Chicago, Philly, etc. (which is a good thing IMO).

They opened up cap in 2003 and that was`in large part to entice Duncan to resign. Maybe the same scenario will playout again. Arenas will have a player option in '08 and has said he'll go to another team if the Wiz won't be a le contender. Maybe Duncan would give the Spurs a sweet re-signing and add Arenas.

Last time I checked, these players play for money not where they live and how big or cool or shiney it is.

They'd play and move to OKC if they were going to be paid 9 million a year.

    Two different situations.

Duncan was drafted by this team. He's settled here. He's one of the best ever to play in the NBA.

Unless the Spurs were low balling him big time, I doubt he'd sign anywhere else.

I thought ben would go to the bulls

    that did not shock me

    duncan hates the spotlight
that rules out the big markets
duncan is not going if he would have bolted it would have been when david had to fly to tim and convince him to stay
he is settled now he has a kid now in sa

I think people are focusing to narrowly on Duncan staying or leaving. Obviously it's a possibility. The point is '08 is a watershed year and how is it obviously playing into the Spurs' planning.

Spurs fans my hate to see the front office think long term, but it is something that they should be doing. You look at other teams out there who compete one year then fall flat on their face the next. The Spurs don't do that. And yeah, it helps having Tim but having Garnett hasn't stopped Minnesota from ing everything up. There are tons of teams with star caliber players who just don't have the forsight and planning to keep a contendor out on the court year in and year out. Be grateful for that.

I think the Spurs tried the method of holding a team together....Parker, Gino, Bowen, Duncan, Rasho...

But they realized that just doesn't work for them....

All three championship teams have had different caliber players.....

    I don't mind the 08' plan.....

I think they put in that player option....in hopes that Duncan will somehow take less money.....to help this team make a final push for some les....ala....Bowen, but not that drastic.....

Duncan, already had his rookie deal, then 3 year deal, and his 100million+ deal....and it's not out of his character to do whats best for the team......

Around that time...he should still be effective enough where he can handle teams easily in the playoffs.....

Thus, in 08'....the Spurs will make that Splash in free agency once again.....

So, expect those two year contracts this year in free agency for lower tier free agents....and let's hope that whatever player or players that we get...have break out season's or shoot to s om along Duncan and the rest of the boys...

Duncan being a FA doesn't take him off the books, folks. In fact, he would count a multiplier (125%? 150%) on the cap until signed. I think this was put in as an option for Tim to opt, and then resign a long deal to finish his career, but it would be a bad deal for him when he can just collect those last two years at 12.5% raises and then sign a shorter deal at the lower raise rate if he wants to continue.

As for him leaving? I won't worry unless he hires Arn Tellem. Pop has always said that they go into the office, he asks Tim how much he wants, and he pays him that.

Duncan and KG are not signing cheap. David Robinson threatened to sign for the MCE with the Knicks when Pop tried to get him cheap in '01. Yes, David Robinson.

if the spurs are making moves in fear of duncan leaving in 2008 thats the surest way to sour him on san antonio and lead him to contemplate making a move.

KG already gave back money to the Pups, not that it's helped.

i don't see duncan opting out, considering the last 2years of the contract would be the highest salary years. 20plus million each.

Lol one of the best ever to play in the nba? Personally, i dont even think he is the best spur of all time, i think david robinson has him barely beat.
