Military recruiting for June once again met or exceeded goals across all four branches:

    • Marines: 105%

    • Army: 102%

    • Air Force:101%

    • Navy: 100%

You’ll note that the Marine Corps and Army, responsible for fielding most of the forces on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, have exceeded their goals by the largest margins, despite having higher target numbers than the other branches. They achieved this in the face of a mainstream media attempting to portray the military as rapists, racists, and murderers based up the alleged actions of a handful of men.

Since October 1, all four branches have met or exceed their goals:

    • Army: 104%

    • Marines: 101%

    • Air Force: 101%

    • Navy: 100%

Reserve forces recruiting has not been as even, but interesting enough, the Reserve and Guard forces most likely to be called upon for ground combat overseas (Army National Guard, Army Reserves, Marine Corps Reserves) have been the most successful in recruiting.

    Who are the recruits?

Despite myths to the contrary, today’s military is a far cry from the Vietnam-era draftees. Today’s volunteers (PDF) are better educated than their peers, come from middle-class or upper middle-class homes, and tend to come from suburban and rural areas.

Certain areas of the country are somewhat under over and underrepresented geographically according to recruiting data, with the southern and rural states over-represented, the urban northeast, north central and west coast states are under-represented. Again, interestingly enough, their seems to be a rough correlation to this map.

Make of it what you will.

Do you have the graphic for which states are over and under represented for comparison?

There wasn't a state-by-state breakdown in the report I read. Here's from where the statement is based.

    • The south produces 41% of all recruits (compared to 36% of the 18-24 year old population).

    • The northeast generates 14% of new recruits (18% of the 18-24 year old population).

    • The west and north central regions produce 21 and 24% of new recruits (accounting for 24% and 23%, respectively, of the 18-24 year old population).

Those poor kids just can't flee the south fast enough. Maybe there is hope for this country.

Pentagon officials announced Monday that the Army has managed to achieve its latest recruiting goals, while admitting that they have lowered some standards that had been set to ensure the quality of the force.
If you're going to try to paint pictures with your numbers, at least paint the appropriate ones.

The DoD also doesn't mention that goals were lowered due to the inevitability of not meeting them.

It probably happened, but not nearly on a wide scale as what we are seeing now.

Don't forget that they raised the recruitment age to 42 and lowered intelligence standards and stopped being so picky - neck tatoos, questionable social behavior, etc, etc, etc...

The military's revelation last week that former Pfc. Steven Green, who allegedly organized the rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and the killing of her family, suffered from "anti-social personality disorder" sheds new light on the importance of how the Army decides whom to sign up for service, say military analysts.

"The issue is not whether they've met their quota," said Winslow Wheeler, an expert on the U.S. military at the Center for Defense Information in Washington. "The issue is quality ... and what concessions they are willing to make to meet this quota."

Coincidentally, the Pentagon's announcement on recruiting came on the same day the military identified several soldiers it accuses of participating in the rape and murders with Green.

Green faces murder and kidnapping charges in the case. Four others, identified as Sgt. Paul E. Cortez, Spc. James P. Barker, Pfc. Jesse V. Spielman and Pfc. Bryan L. Howard, face similar charges, while Sgt. Anthony W. Yribe is charged with dereliction of duty for failing to prevent or report the attack.

Army recruiters found 8,756 new recruits for active-duty service last month, surpassing their stated target of 8,600 -- marking the 13th consecutive month the service met or exceeded its target. The active Army now has 51,612 new recruits, and it hopes to sign up a total of 80,000 new recruits by the end of the 2006 budget year on Sept. 30.

    (shakes head)

The war on terror is not ultimately a military one. It is a PR war. This is exactly the kind of short-sighted stuff that will lose that war: Relaxing standards of acceptance to people more likely to do things that will be huge PR blunders.

    Greaaat.

If we truly were getting the numbers and skills we needed, we wouldn't be forcing so many people to remain in the service long past the end of their commitments.

Right, if the US were not fighting in Iraq, we would all lose our rights and liberties.

Thanks America for fighting for our freedom by liberating Iraq.

Marines to recall troops to active duty

By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press Writer 18 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - The Marine Corps will soon begin ordering thousands of its troops back to active duty because of a shortage of volunteers for
    Iraq and
Afghanistan — the first involuntary recall since the early days of the war.

Up to 2,500 Marines will be brought back at a time, and there is no cap on the total number who may be forced back into service as the military helps fight the war on terror. The call-ups will begin in the next several months.

The number of troops in Iraq has climbed back to 138,000 — the prevailing number for much of last year. Troop levels had been declining this year, to a low of about 127,000, amid growing calls from Congress and the public for a phased withdrawal. Escalating violence in Baghdad has led military leaders to increase the U.S. presence there.

This is the first time the Marines have had to use the involuntary recall since the beginning of the Iraq combat. The Army, meanwhile, has issued orders recalling about 10,000 soldiers so far, but many of those may be granted exemptions.

Marine Col. Guy A. Stratton, head of the manpower mobilization section, estimated that there is a current shortfall of about 1,200 Marines needed to fill positions in upcoming deployments.

Some of the military needs, he said, include engineers, intelligence, military police and communications.

As of Tuesday, nearly 22,000 of the 138,000 troops in Iraq were Marines.

The call-up will affect Marines in the Individual Ready Reserve, a segment of the reserves that consists mainly of those who have left active duty but still have time remaining on their eight-year military obligations.

Generally, Marines enlist for four years, then serve the other four years either in the regular Reserves, where they are paid and train periodically, or in the Individual Ready Reserve. Marines in the IRR are obligated to report only one day a year but can be involuntarily recalled to active duty.

To date, about 5,000 Army IRR soldiers have mobilized, and about 2,200 of those are currently serving, according to Lt. Col. Bryan Hilferty, an Army spokesman. Of those 2,200, about 16 percent are volunteers, he said. A typical Army enlistment obligation is also for eight years.

According to Stratton, there are about 59,000 Marines in the IRR, but the Corps has decided to exempt from the call-up those who are either in their first year or last year of the reserve status. As a result, the pool of available Marines is about 35,000.

The deployments can last up to two years, but on average would be 12 to 18 months, Stratton said. Each Marine who is being recalled will get five months to prepare before having to report.

President Bush authorized the recall on July 26. It is the first such recall since early 2003, when about 2,000 Marines were involuntarily activated for the initial ground war in Iraq.

"Since this is going to be a long war," said Stratton, "we thought it was judicious and prudent at this time to be able to use a relatively small portion of those Marines to help us augment our units."

You know, I'm sure the architect, Karl Rove, can make a fight-for-America draft work for the GOP, I can just feel the canned-nationalism and awe-inspiring country music to support the 'Fight-For-America draft' now, the young GOP kids would eat it up, but he was vehemently against a draft when he was a young Republican supporting Nixon in college.
