BEIRUT: Israel switched gears in its military campaign against Lebanon Monday and Tuesday, launching a series of debilitating air strikes against privately owned factories throughout the country and dealing a devastating blow to an economy already paralyzed by a week of hits on residential areas and crucial infrastructure.

The production facilities of at least five companies in key industrial sectors - including the country's largest dairy farm, Liban Lait; a paper mill; a packaging firm and a pharmaceutical plant - have been disabled or completely destroyed. Industry insiders say the losses will cripple the economy for decades to come.

"I think the picture will be much worse than we can possible imagine when the whole thing ends, but the direct damage from yesterday's attacks to the industrial sector alone will take years to recover from," said Wajid al-Bisri, the vice-president of the Lebanese Association of Industrialists (LAI).

Sometimes life requires empathy. Imagine for a second what the Palestinian, Syrian and all Arab children in the region must be thinking. Israeli bombs are destroying their homes, the factories that supplied their goods, the roads that brought those goods to market, and the bombs are killing the police, teachers, and parents who once kept them safe. Meanwhile, 100,000's of Palestinians and their families have fled to Syria, where the Syrians are giving them food, medicine and a warm place to sleep. Palestinians are trusting Syria again and that's just what the Syrians want.

Israeli may be winning the war, but unless they can learn to work with the Lebanese, they will once again lose the battle for Arab minds and in the future face a much greater threat than Hezbollah.

They are already taught from birth to hate Israel and to kill all Jew dogs. This particular SELF-DEFENSE war totally provoked by Hezbollah won't make much difference to that schooling.

The non-Hezbollah Lebanese, including the 40% Christian, who were neutral or even positive towards Israel, or at least not violently radicalized, are probably quite anti-Isreal, now. However, their anger should be directed at themselves for not standing up to Hezbollah and Syria/Iran as Hezbolloh effectively colonized Lebanon from south Beirut all the way to the Leabanes-Israeli border.

No Hezbollah in Lebanon shooting rockets into Isreal and invading across the border into Israel, no retaliatory war from Israel. It's pretty ing simple.

Isreal must absolutely win this war and destroy Hezbollah in S. Lebanon. Anything less will be taken by the Hezbollah and Muslims as a Hezbollah victory and show of successful resistance.

When Israel withdrew from Lebanon and Gaza, the Arabs saw that as Israeli weakness and Arab victory, and the Arabs filled the vacuum left by the Israelis not with with "democratically elected" Hamas and Hezbollah. I fully sympathsize with I srael's exasperation. Unlike dubya and head invading non-threatening Iraq, Israel faces an immediate, adjacent, mortal threat.

Actually, they're Lebanese Shiites, and they are supported by Syria and Iran as always. Palestinians are primarily Sunnis, and draw their support from Saudis, Jordanians, and Egyptians, i.e. other Sunnis. You seem to know about as much as Bush about the religious groups in the area.

lebanese don't have the millitary means for destruction of hezbollah, just as the hezbollah and palestinians don't have the means for destruction of Israel. (to calm certain people down: just a comparison of strength, not call for destruction of Israel).

In 622, Medina became the seat of Muhammad's growing movement after the Hijra. In the same year Muhammad was invited to come and live in Yathrib (and act as a sort of mediator).

According to Islamic tradition, the two tribes got word of Muhammad in Mecca and decided to allow him to resolve their conflict. In 627, the army of Mecca once again attacked Medina under the command of Abu Sufyan. Unable to defeat muslim on the front lines, Abu Sufyan asked the Jewish Banu Qurayza tribe to attack the Muslims from behind the lines. The Jewish tribe agreed, in a clear breach of the Medina charter, and hostilities between them and Muslims broke out. After the defeat of Meccans, the tribe unconditionally surrendered, and appointed Sa'ad ibn Mua'dh to be their judge. Mua'dh judged against the Jews (his decision was based upon jewish law as requested by Banu Qurayza itself), and all male members of the tribe were executed. The women and children were sold into slavery. That was the end of hostilites at Medina, and subsequent Jewish tribes continued to live at peace with Medinan Muslims.

It's easy to make comments like this but lets be serious. Not everyone in every country plays a significant part in their goverment, most simply content if their government provides them basic social and public services.

Even if they had a general dissatisfaction over the government allowing the Hezbollah presence in Lebanon, what actions could they possibly take that would make the government stand up and take action?
