I'm very heartbroken today...

We had to put our dog to sleep last night. I've had him for almost half my life! In Feb he had been diagnosed with heart disease and the vet said that he might have died during the night if we hadn't taken him in. We put him on meds and he had been fine...every once in a while he'd have an episode but he'd be fine the next day. Well, on Saturday we noticed that he was having an episode, we gave him his pillies (what we'd call them and he'd run to get them) and nothing changed by yesterday morning. He wouldn't even take his pillies with chicken or turkey...he LOVED table food. He was peeing without lifting his leg so he was basically peeing on himself. He wouldn't lie down, his breathing was shallow...he just looked really bad. So we decided it was time. I picked him up in a towel which he usually detests and held him in my arms on the way to the emergency vet. He never cried, just put his head on my chest while I kissed him and let the tears flow... I wound up wiping my tears all over his head but he didn't care. We got there and they took him in and we (me, mom and sis) were with him the whole time. The vet said he didn't have any blood pressure. I'm glad he's not suffering but it just sucks! Even the vet cried. I am going to miss him and I don't know what my other little Chihuahua will do. She's sad today. I hate losing animals but I know it's the best thing for him. Now he's with my Grandfather (Chico always slept in Gramps bed) who passed away a year ago.

I need to get out of this funk... it just hurts.

Sounds like my dog when he was feeling bad and we all knew it was time. We were all sad and crying because he had been a great dog, truly part of the family. When we asked him if he wanted to go for one-last ride, he almost look relieved like the pain was over and he knew it was his time as well.

It was very hard, but things get better.
