Chris Wilcox: Contract Issues Not Resolved
    RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
    Wednesday, August 9, 2006

Update: Wilcox, resigned to not agreeing on a long-term contract with the Sonics, wants a sign-and-trade deal, but will accept a one-year contract if the Sonics are unwilling to budge in Tuesday's final meeting between the two sides, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports.

Recommendation: The two sides are off $5 million, with Seattle offering a three-year $19 million contract and Wilcox demanding $24 million over three years. The Sonics have passed on sign-and-trade offers, so the only remaining option likely is a one-year tender. But that option virtually ensures Wilcox will leave Seattle as a free agent next year. The Sonics need Wilcox's athleticism in the frontcourt, which makes it a bit of a mystery as to why they are playing such hardball over a mere $1.6 million a year. How about split the difference and make it $21.5 million?

Even for $24M/3 years, Wilcox isn't a bad deal. Seattle has a nice and deep team, playoffs aren't out of reach for them at all.

Wilcox has major work ethic issues. So much so that in LA he had stipulations in his contract about it (which he didn't meet). So that's why Seattle is hesitant to pay him.
