Joyce Van Exel, the mother of former Spurs guard Nick Van Exel who shared the fearless at ude her son used to become an NBA All-Star, died Tuesday in Houston. She was 52.
Joyce was found dead of an apparent heart attack in the house Van Exel bought for her near his home in Houston. An autopsy is planned, said Van Exel's agent, Tony Dutt.
"It's a really emotional time for him," Dutt said. "But we're going to do everything we can to help him through it."
Joyce raised Van Exel as a single parent in Kenosha, Wis., after his father went to prison. She worked the night shift at an automobile plant for 28 years but always made sure dinner was ready for Van Exel after he arrived home from school.
Even after Van Exel signed a $77 million contract with Denver, Joyce resisted his efforts to convince her to quit her job. Only after a stranger shot Joyce after she returned home from work one night in July 2001 did Joyce join her son in Houston.
Mindful of his upbringing, Van Exel delivered turkeys to underprivileged families every Thanksgiving in the city where he played. He also took families with single-parent mothers on a Christmas shopping spree each year.
Van Exel spent last season as the Spurs' backup point guard. Bothered by bone spurs in his left elbow, Van Exel said he intended to retire after the season.
Dutt said Van Exel recently had begun to rethink those plans, "but that was before this happened. I don't know what he'll do now."
"We're saddened by Nick's loss," Spurs general manager R.C. Buford said. "The thoughts and prayers of the Spurs' organization and players are with him."
Funeral arrangements are pending. Joyce is expected to be buried in Wisconsin.
My heart and prayer goes out to Van Exel and his family.

i'll pray for him, i know he is going through a very hard time.
I had the wonderful honor of sitting with Nick's mom at a game in Houston. Her joy and vibrance was contagious, and she absolutely adored her son. My heart and prayers go out to Nick, her family, and all her many friends. Peace.

A heartfelt prayer and deepest condolences to NVE and his family.
Condolences to NVE and his family.
Dude, that was back in 98 when he played for the Nuggets.
He was only two years removed from being an All Star starter. Don't judge by what you saw last year. NVE was the ing .
He didn't get all of that money. He opted out a year early to sign with a championship-level team. If I remember correctly, he left about $10 mil on the table by forfeiting his final year of that contract.
My condolences to Nick and his family[*][*][*]
Oh man that sucks. I know how he must be feeling right now. I just lost my dad back in April and I'm still having a really hard time dealing with it. My thougts go out to you Nick.![]()

I am very sorry for your loss too. My prayers will go for you as well.
Damn. My mom's about that same age too. I can't imagine how hard it must be for him right now.
We'll be praying for you NVE!
WOW very sad. She was still young. Prayers to him and his family.
Sincere condolences to NVE and family. God be with you.
May God comfort NVE and his family at this time.
My prayers to NVE and family
It's one the hardest things to go through. I'm glad R.C still considers him part of the Spurs family. Hope he rethinks retirement and gets motivated to win a championship next year with the Spurs to honor his mother. That would be awesome..
