Jewish man removed from airplane for praying

Some fellow passengers are questioning why an Orthodox Jewish man was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight in Montreal last week for praying.
The man was a passenger on a Sept. 1 flight from Montreal to New York City when the incident happened.
The airplane was heading toward the runway at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport when eyewitnesses said the Orthodox man began to pray.
"He was clearly a Hasidic Jew," said Yves uy, a passenger seated nearby. "He had some sort of cover over his head. He was reading from a book.
"He wasn't exactly praying out loud but he was lurching back and forth," uy added.
The action didn't seem to bother anyone, uy said, but a flight attendant approached the man and told him his praying was making other passengers nervous.
"The attendant actually recognized out loud that he wasn't a Muslim and that she was sorry for the situation but they had to ask him to leave," uy said.
The man, who spoke neither English nor French, was escorted off the airplane.
Air Canada Jazz termed the situation "delicate," but says it received more than one complaint about the man's behaviour.
The crew had to act in the interest of the majority of passengers, said Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stewart.
"The passenger did not speak English or French, so we really had no choice but to return to the gate to secure a translator," she said.
The airline is not saying if the man was told he was not allowed to pray, but a spokesperson said the man was back on board the next flight to New York.
Jewish leaders in Montreal criticized the move as insensitive, saying the flight attendants should have explained to the other passengers that the man was simply praying and doing no harm.
Hasidic Rabbi Ronny Fine said he often prays on airplanes, but typically only gets curious stares.
"If it's something that you're praying in your own seat and not taking over the whole plane, I don't think it should be a problem," said Fine.
The Jewish group B'nai Brith Canada has offered to help give Air Canada crews sensitivity training

thought this news story might belong here in politics - i know things can get heated.
BTW - I did not know that Muslims could not pray.. thats is what I am sopposing from the language of the article.
So is noone aloud to pray or ias praying OK as long as noone else knows what you are doing.
What if he had muscular dystrophy? or tuerrettes? Would the mumbling and "lurching" have gotton him kicked off the plane than?

No. In fact that behavior gets you shot.
George Bush doesnt' care about Jewish people.
I'm not fond of the word Jew, it can be used as a derogatory comment....I prefer Jewish man or woman.
well if it bothers you that much I can ghange it to "jewish".
I did get the article from a jewish momma on my mommas website who refered to the man in the article as "a jew". I myself am part ethnicly jewish/isreali/whateveryouwanttolabelit an it doesn;t bother me ot say Jewish or Jew or Judaism.
i think things like that are all in the context and tone of which they are said.
Like "white" or "black" are not derogatory but can be used so.
But as I said - if you are that uncomfortable with the word "jew" I can change it.
I was thinking a more interesting Forum Social Experiment would be to just change "Jew" to "Muslim"....
That's what he gets for praying to someone other than Jesus.
Jew, white, black, , all are OK
People are so ing freaked out with this terror stuff. Poor guy was praying that their plane doesn't crash, which means he was praying for all of them, too, and they kick his Orthodox ass off the plane. People are ing narrow-minded nutz.
Can't really blame the people for wanting him checked out. If I saw some guy mumbling prayers I couldn't understand while "lurching back and forth" on an aircraft I had just boarded, I'd want to know what the his story was as well. You can blame Islamic terrorists for this one. The recent scare in England has everyone on edge again. Nobody wants to be another statistic for these sick minded freaks.
The hat, the black tunic, and the sideburns curling down to his shoulders should have tipped them off that they weren't dealing with an Islamic terrorist. Are Canadians not that culturally aware?
He was obviously al-Qaida is Hasidic disguise.
3 white people seated next to each other hold hands and raise their arms up, squint their eyes shut real hard (seems to be key "Christian" indication of whatever), wag their heads back and forth like they were in a made-for-TV ecstasy. Would they get their asses kicked off the plane?
All I have to go on is the original post, which states that he was wearing "some sort of cover over his head", and nothing follows. If you have information stating that he was decked out in all that garb, I'd like to see it. But even if he was, there are many people in this world who are ignorant to the religious cultures/languages of other people around the world. All they know is that there's a guy acting out of the ordinary on plane when the world is full of sick terrorists who would just love to crash it into a tall building.
Nevertheless, the bottom line of my original post is that islamic terrorists are the reason for this kind of crap. If they could somehow find it in their kind little hearts to stop hijacking planes and flying them into the ground/buildings/etc, we would never have this problem. Don't blame the public. Blame the sick twisted terrorists.
No.
Blame Canada.
That's probably the knee-jerk reaction most of us would have. The truth, for the most part (Richard Reid's an exception) , is that terrorists put forth much effort to blend into their surroundings, being inconpicuous rather that con uous. In large part, the success of their mission is based on the element of surprise.
