SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have signed Charles Lee, Rich Melzer, Jared Reiner and Jamar Smith. Per team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Lee, a 6-3 guard out of Bucknell University, played on the Spurs 2006 Summer League team that competed in the Rocky Mountain Revue. In three games, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.0 steals in 12.0 minutes. Lee, the 2006 Patriot League Player of the Year, helped guide Bucknell to two straight Patriot League Championships and two straight NCAA Tournament second-round appearances. He finished his career at Bucknell with 1,147 career points (11.0 ppg), 568 rebounds (5.5 rpg) and 167 steals (1.61 spg) making him only one of 15 players in program history to amass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Melzer joined Lee on the Spurs 2006 Summer League team. The 6-8 forward appeared in all six games for the Silver and Black, averaging 9.5 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 25.8 minutes. He spent the 2005-06 season splitting time between the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBA Development League and the New Zealand Breakers in the Australian National Basketball League. In 14 games with the Thunderbirds, Melzer averaged 9.6 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 24.2 minutes. In New Zealand, he averaged 18.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.4 blocks in 25 games. The 2004 Division III Player of the Year spent four years at University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he earned First Team All-America honors as a junior and senior. Melzer was named to the All-WIAC First Team his last three years and was named the league’s MVP his final two seasons. He ended his career as the school’s second all-time leading scorer with 2,363 points (22.9 ppg), the third all-time leading rebounder with 821 boards (8.0 rpg) and the all-time leading shot-blocker with 189 rejections (1.83 bpg).

Reiner, a 6-11 center, played in 19 games for the Chicago Bulls during the 2004-05 season, averaging 1.1 points and 2.0 rebounds. He has also spent time in training camp with the L.A. Clippers in 2005 and was later signed as a free agent by the Phoenix Suns but did not appear in any games before being waived. The past summer Reiner played for the Seattle Sonics in the 2006 Rocky Mountain Revue where he averaged 5.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in 15.8 minutes over six games. Reiner attended the University of Iowa where he averaged 5.7 points and 4.7 rebounds in 109 games. During his senior season he averaged 10.5 points and 7.2 rebounds in 13 contests before missing the rest of the season due to injury. As a junior he led the Big 10 in rebounding (8.3 rpg) and was selected honorable mention All-Big 10. He finished his career with the Buckeyes ranked seventh in school history in blocked shots (90).

Smith also saw action for the Spurs at the 2006 Rocky Mountain Revue. The former Maryland Terrapin appeared in five games, averaging 7.8 points and 4.6 rebounds in 19.8 minutes. The 6-9 forward spent the 2005-06 season playing for the Austin Toros of the D-League. He was the only player to appear in all 48 games for the Toros, averaging 11.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 28.8 minutes. Smith finished his collegiate career at University of Maryland after playing his first two seasons at Alleghany Community College. As a senior he started all 32 games, averaging 13.1 points and 8.8 rebounds while posting 11 double-doubles. During his two seasons at Alleghany, Smith helped lead the Gators to back-to-back Maryland Junior College Championships. As a sop re he averaged a double-double (17.9 points and 12.8 rebounds) while leading the team to a school-best 32-4 record.

Has anyone informed the Spurs' front office that the summer has started?

The Spurs needed to retool and the best they could do was Francisco Elson and Jared Reiner? Talk about a guy who doesn't deserve a spot in any training camp on this continent. Perhaps a spot on a women's college basketball squad, but I believe he's used up his eligibility. I doubt he'll be able to do anything ... even in preseason games going up against third and fourth string players.

Enough about Elson. On the other hand, Reiner isn't that horrible. He's kinda like the love child of Will Perdue and Steve Urkel.

What I haven't seen from the Spurs this year is a rookie "phenom" being invited to camp who will gain instant fame and fan favor---and then get cut and fade from sight.

I think Melzer's gonna make it this year. He has pretty steady numbers, good enough for a 3rd backup SG

    http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/b...s.2d7ddea.html

Reiner joins forwards Rich Melzer and Jamar Smith and guard Charles Lee, each of who accepted camp invitations after playing for the Spurs' summer-league team. The Spurs are considering adding one more non-guaranteed contract to increase their roster to 20 before leaving for France in two weeks.
Teams are allowed to carry 15 players during the season, and the Spurs already have 14 with guaranteed contracts. Melzer, Smith, Lee, Reiner and any other camp invitees likely will compete with guard Melvin Sanders for the final opening.

    F. Oberto.......J. Butler.......F. Elson.............J. Reiner
    T. Duncan......R. Horry.......M. Bonner..........J. Smith
    B. Bowen.......M. Finley......E. Williams..........R. Melzer
    M. Ginobili......B. Barry........M. Sanders........
    T. Parker.......B. Udrih........J. Vaughn..........C. Lee
