Football: Trinity begins anew by dominating foe

Seven days made a huge difference.

After a stunning defeat to Texas Lutheran last weekend, the Trinity Tigers took out their frustrations on the Redlands (Calif.) Bulldogs by scoring 35-straight points in a 35-10 victory at E.M Stevens Stadium on Saturday night.

Tigers quarterback Jacob Cannon, filling in the injured Blake Barmore, threw for three touchdowns while completing 11 of 17 passes to give the Tigers a 2-1 record and momentum going into conference play.

"The message this week was, 'Don't let TLU beat you twice,'" Trinity coach Steve Mohr said. "In the third quarter, we were able to score quickly and put them away."

William Kuhlmann scored twice on catches of 16 and 6 yards, including a diving grab to give the Tigers a 21-3 lead going to halftime.

"They were playing deep on us because we had been burning them, so we ran a comeback route, there was no one there and (Jacob) put the ball where it had to be," Kuhlmann said.

Six interceptions by the Tigers, including two from linebacker Jeff Jones, stifled a Bulldogs team that has scored only 13 points in its two games.

Jones, a freshman, filled in for the Tigers after Philip Kownslar went down early in the game with a right knee injury. Kownsler will have a MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, Mohr said.

Jones scored on a 44-yard interception return at the 9:33 mark of the third quarter to increase the Tigers' lead to 32 points.

"It's nothing on me, that's just great senior leadership," Jones said. "Had the D-line not had a great pass rush and the other DBs not been in coverage the way they were, they wouldn't have thrown it to me."

Greg Bielski led Trinity on the ground with 51 yards on 10 carries, including a 20-yard score less than three minutes before Jones' touchdown.

Receiver Anthony Hicks scored on his only catch of the game, a 6-yard pass from Cannon in the second quarter.

Zach Shafer led the Bulldogs (0-2) with 82 yards on 18 carries and 32 yards on two catches.

Nice bounceback for the Tigers. If I understood the stories correctly, TU played a good portion of the TLU game without their 1st and 2nd QBs. Cannon should stablize them until Barmore gets back. Still sounds like the Tigers are rebuilidng a bit; their playoff streak may be in some jeopardy.

    Thanks, JB.

Actually, Cannon was in for most of the game. Their defense looked very good last night. I'm really hoping they have me at the DePauw game next weekend.

I hate Trinity. on the article though JB.

TLU just had it in for Trinity last week. If I remember correctly it's something like TLU hasn't beaten them since 1977. Then, TLU lost this weekend 28-7 to Mississippi College because they couldn't get their heads their asses and had a few nasty holding penalties.

Hmmm. I thought one of the QB's was injured and that the other had been disciplined, leaving the 3rd QB. Maybe my memory is fuzzy and the QB who got injured was Cannon. I don't really know, though. I don't have the best relationship with Steve Mohr, so I follow the Tigers from a distance.

Cannon was the disciplined one against TLU.

They are D-3 NCAA schools. Trinity is located here in S.A.

I went back and looked at the TU release from the TLU game and saw that Barmore started against TLU, but was injured early in that game, so the third QB ended up playing most of that game. If Cannon can stay out of trouble, they have a much better chance of being compe ive with him at the helm until Barmore is ready to play again.

They're still some distance from being anywhere near as good as they were from about 1998-2003. They'll have to win mostly with defense this year. Remains to be seen if that defense is good enough to get them over in the SCAC again.

Good article again, JB. Hope you get to the DPU game next week - that should be, as almost always, the game to determine the SCAC champion. DPU is on their fourth coach in as many seasons ... are 2-0 on the season but neither win has been what you would call impressive or against impressive compe ion, and the game in SA will be their first game away from Blackstock this season. They always get up for Trinity, tho, and perhaps this is the year they get over the hump. They have an excellent DL by the name of Dustin Hertel that you'll want to keep an eye on. They are breaking in a new QB who is getting the job done but has not faced anything like the "Black Flag" defense. 6 INTs yesterday ... not too shabby.

Trinity owned Texas recruiting (as far as D3 recruiting goes) until HSU and UMHB made their presence felt. UMHB didn't even start football until 2000. Besides having great coaching staffs and support from the community, both of those ASC schools are less costly and have less stringent admissions requirements.

What Trinity has lacked the last few years are speedy receivers who can play the vertical passing game that Mohr prefers. And this year the OL is all new and has not clicked yet. They'll need a better performance against Hertel and company. Hopefully Barmore has shaken the cobwebs out ... Cannon is too inconsistent. Sometimes great, sometimes not.

Ashbeegh, I'm sorry you "hate TU." While TLU had not defeated Trinity since '77, they only started playing again about 5 or 6 years ago after about 20+ year gap. TLU barely got the job done against a team playing its scout team QB most of the way; the kid had never taken a college snap before that game. TLU, at home for the third straight week, lost yesterday to an MC team that was playing its second team QB the entire way. The final score was 28-21, not 28-7. TLU is going to face much tougher teams in Hardin-Simmons, out to even the score after last year's loss, Mary Hardin-Baylor, and Howard Payne. I think some folks read way too much into that Trinity win ... Adam Vivyal is a decent QB but is no Sean Salinas.

I'm just saying it out of team spirit that I "hate TU" because I go to Texas Lutheran. I'm glad that Trinity is doing well, any San Antonio team that does well is good for me. The Trinity QB problem was something I mentioned to all my friends who didn't seem to care as to how we beat them, other then we did beat them. I missed the Austin College game, but Adam, from my perspective, needs some work, and may get better (I didn't even know he played football until this semester!). Our alternative in a younger Matt Schumacher looks viable. I left with the game at 28-7, so that's why my score was wrong. Sorry about that, it was heartbreaking after I heard from so many football players that 'It's going to be the year and we won't be able to do this and this and Mock Trial because we'll be in Salem, Virginia."

We will have our hands full with UMHB and Hardin-Simons. And yet again, from a purely personal stand point (in that I went to high school with the QB from UMHB) I hope we can stick it to UMHB when we play them later on in season.

So if anyone is ever looking for an objective ASC overview don't look at me.

np, ashbeegh, I'm thrilled to actually find someone here that has a clue about anything having to do with Division III football in Texas. Mueller's a class act and has done wonderful things with your program. Good luck this weekend against UMHB - it would be nice to see someone new in the playoffs for a change.

Yeah. We had a half assed hope last year with the tie breaker between Hardin-Simons (I think?) and they just handed it to us. I'm just upset that it's my senior year We'll see, we'll see. Thanks for the good luck! We'll need it, I'm sure. I've only heard really good things about playing them in Belton (because that's where they are, right?).
