I need to pick up a new wireless router sometime this week...the one i've been looking at is the Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54G) (802.11g) But out of all the stores I've looked at $49.99 seems to be the cheapest price (without mail in rebates and such). Are they really that expensive? Or is there somewhere else I should look (I've tried Best Buy, Circuit City, & CompUSA). Or is there an equivalent brand but at a cheaper price?

    Any help is appreciated!

Don't get a linksys. They are pieces of and you'll have problems.

    Buy online and save money.

I have a NetGear 802.11g WGT624v3 and can't recommend it. I've had to have it replaced b/c the first one constantly reset itself. The new one is better but still resets a couple of times a week. One of the PCs equipped with the WG111T USB fobs constantly goes down of its own accord; I've replaced fobs, cables, reinstalled s/w, tried different software versions, run diagnostics, but it keeps happening. The customer service techs in India follow their little menus and aren't terribly helpful.

It's odd, because I've used Netgear in the past and found it to be quite good. I also never had a problem with the old 802.11b D-link routers/etc. that this setup replaced, and the machines are less than 20 feet apart in the same room.

D-link here. Works well. Price is relative, but when I bought my old D-link 'b' router, it was over $100.

Had a Linksys router that worked for about 8 months and then crapped out. Now I have a Dlink router for about 4 months and so far so good...

This is a Belkin Router. It works fine. I've never had any problems like others have listed here.

We have had problems with the other end of it though.. but this router will work with damn near anything.

I don't need it because my dsl came with one.

    Let me know.

Damn, tough break. I have a Netgear 802.11g WGR614v6 and a WG111 USB and I've only had 3 dropped connections in about 6 weeks (from basement to 2nd floor).

Anyways, $49.99 sounds awfully expensive for that router. I got my router and 2 USB wireless keys for $55 CDN (about $45 US), although they were refurb.

I haven't had any problems with Linksys. I had the same wireless router for 4 or 5 years, until recently it decided that it didn't want to let the computer get to the internet. So I went to BestBuy and got a Wireless-G router with the storage link. Works wonderfully.

Linksys routers are a crapshoot because you never know how long it will last. I've had one for 2 years (got it free) so I am obviously the lucky one.

Netgear is pretty respected. Just make sure you can use WPA (best with RADIUS authentication but that requires infrastructure work) AND MAC filtering. I can't imagine a wireless router without those capabilities but I would at least verfiy before buying. The more protected you make your Wireless Network the less of a target you will be to a hacker (why bother when you can move on down the street to a wide open network?)

And, no matter what anyone or any marketing material tells you.. there is NO secure Wireless network. It's all about making it undesirable to even bother.

Also.... if using a shared key make sure the passphrase you use is AT LEAST 22 characters.
