I have a friend who is in a medical profession that requires licensing by a state board. She had an intern working for her who was terribly inept. She had counseled him on several occasions about his clinical and patient skills. Anyway she finally had to let him go. In retaliation he filed a complaint making outrageous charges and false claims about her with the state board using a fake email address. The name he signed on the email was the name of one of her very loyal and very rich corporate clients. The client is furious that his name was used to make these false charges and contacted the board to say he didn't write the email. So that part is taken care of.

Now she has contacted the school to try and prevent him from becoming licensed to practiced due to his incompetence and serious lack of ethics, but the licensing board will have to issue this man a state license to practice in Texas unless she can prove that he is the one who actually sent that email. Then it will be an ethics violation and they will have cause to deny him a license. How can she go about finding the IP adress that this email was sent from?

She should be able to look into the headers of the email and see the IP. There should be something in the settings of her mail server that can "show headers" or "trace email".

I work in the medical profession and my advice to her is to stfu and move on. You don't want any State Board investigating your ass for anything.

THEY WILL FINE YOU FOR ANYTHING.

Its best to let this crap blow over and move on.... Stay beneath the radar screen.

May I assume that someone else provided a signature stating that this guy is competent? Something is missing from your story.

Maybe the IP address is still in the header. However, in your typical spam, this information is spoofed, and there is no way to trace it. There are a variety of proposals to fix this problem, but any widespread implementation is probably a few years away.

The reason why spoofing is not handled comes from the days when communcation between computers was more uncertain and often happened through modems, so the protocol was designed to make delivery as reliable as possible even if it took several days over several phone line connections. Verifying your email might require another message in the other direction taking the same amount of time.

After she dismissed him from his internship he had to find another internship. I have no idea how that is going. But in order for her to place any negative information in his file with the school, which would then be passed on to the board of licensing, she would need proof to back up her claim.

Her main concern is that if he gets licensed, one day he will hurt a patient. His clinical skills are subpar and his judgement is unethical.

It's actually pretty easy to trace an e-mail from headers, but it's not so easy to trace an e-mail with an header from a free e-mail service like Hotmail or Yahoo.

There are programs out there (Net Trace) that will tell you the persons address, legit e-mail address, and internet service provider with only the IPP number. Trouble is, if he is on broadband he can easily change his IPP by unplugging his cable box and plugging it back in less than a minute later since cable based broadband has floating IPP's. If he is only DSL, then his IPP number would always stay the same.
