Well, if history means anything, bet the house on the Rangers to win the World Series in 2007.
I'm curious about where they go from here.
ESPN:
Showalter won't manage Rangers in 2007
ESPN.com news services
The Texas Rangers parted ways with manager Buck Showalter, Dallas media outlets reported Wednesday.
The Rangers did not make the postseason in his four years at the helm. Texas lost the finale 3-2 Sunday at Seattle to finish 80-82, its sixth losing record in seven seasons since last making the playoffs in 1999.
Showalter had a contract through 2009 and was the AL manager of the year only two years ago.
Rangers owner Tom Hicks had dinner at his home Tuesday with general manager Jon Daniels and Showalter for a "candid discussion" about the season.
Showalter was 319-329 with the Rangers, his best season 89-73 in 2004 when they were in playoff contention until the final week after Alex Rodriguez was traded. They backtracked last year with only 79 wins.
"It's not about me, none of this," Showalter said after Sunday's game. "That's something I've always known. It's about the players and the fans and the people I work for."
Showalter didn't last longer than four years in his other managerial jobs. Those teams prospered after he left.
The season after Showalter's four-year tenure ended in New York in 1995, the Yankees won three of the next four World Series. That dominating streak was snapped in 2001 by the Arizona Diamondbacks, the expansion team Showalter had built the three previous seasons.
With a revamped starting rotation headed by Kevin Millwood, and an already proven core of everyday players like shortstop Michael Young (.314, team-record 52 doubles) and first baseman Mark Teixeira (33 home runs and 110 RBIs), there were big expectations this year.
The Rangers spent more than two months atop the AL West despite never being more than six games above .500, then were out of first place for good within a week after the All-Star break. They had a losing record at home (39-42) for the first time since 1997, and were third in the AL West for the third straight season.
Asked what went wrong, Showalter said there are no easy answers.
"That's a question you could talk about forever," Showalter said.
"On the positive side, we didn't have a prolonged period of losing," he said. "But we really didn't put together a prolonged period of success either."
Texas never recovered after losing three straight games to 101-game loser Tampa Bay in August, right after a 9-2 stretch that included three straight wins in Detroit.

Id give Joe Girardi whatever he wanted....
That and Id start paying for the best pitchers as well.
Zito, as well as others....
Joe Girardi is Buck Showalter all over again. The reason Buck was fired was because he was an anal-retentive micro-manager. Hiring Girardi is the same bull all over again. IF the Rangers expect Young and Teixeira to sign contract extensions, they needed to do two things- 1. Fire Buck and 2. Get some pitching. If you hire Girardi you basically negate having done no. 1.
A good friend of mine thinks the Rangers need to give Trey Hillman a chance to run the club. That strikes me as an intriguing choice.
Since it's Tom Hicks, though, I'm guessing that Lou Piniella, Dusty Baker, Felipe Alou, or some other big name re-tread will skipper the Rangers next season.
Mike Hargrove, anyone?
Pretty please, would you?
I'm not sure I'd wish that on my worst enemy.
When I die I want 6 Texas Rangers ball players to be my pall bearers. I want them to let me down one last time.
One time, I was having lunch in a cafeteria, and Buck Showalter asked if he could sit at my table. I politely declined his request.
The next day, I had a threesome with a couple of Swedish lingerie models I had just met.
another club that could pay Girardi
Felipe Alou would be the best choice to follow Buck IMO. He's the next Joe Torre.
All moot though until the Rangers make pitching the absolute priority.
all moot also since Felipe Alou is retiring.
Exactly. Good Post. The other thing they need is a pitchers park. You can't win without the great pitching, and pitchers want a pitchers park to play in -like Oakland has. Most foul territory in the majors.
joe after winning manager of the year award is a big name
