Bet that got your attention. This is not exactly a tax hike, but think about how much lower your taxes would be, or what we COULD be spending this money on.

In 2005, the federal government spent $184Bn on interest payments on the national debt.

Projected payments on that debt in 2008 will be $270bn, a 50% increase over the 2005 figure.

The Wall Street Journal reported last week that for the first time in at least 90 years, the United States is now paying noticeably more to foreign creditors than it receives from its investments abroad.

Not only are we paying more, but it isn't being recycled into the economy as it used to, making a higher debt load financed by irresponsible budget deficits all the more alarming.

    Oops.

Spending the "beast" ( as in "starve the beast" ) into huge debt was one of the hidden objectives of the phony Iraq war.

The greatly expanded finance fees are the Repugs poison pill for succeeding administrations and the American people. Watch the Repugs pillory the Dems when the Dems try to reduce the money wasted on the Repugs' federal finance charges.

Note that while ballooning the federal finance charges, the Repugs have, from their first days in office, always protected and enriched the super-rich and corps, by many 100s of $Bs, which was the ONLY reason the Repugs wanted to win office.

you're doing a heckuva job, dubya!

boutons calling Iraq and phony war. Want to tell
those that gave their lives that.

You would run and hide if really confronted with anything that threatened your well being.

Oh, I forgot you have lost all your freedoms, like
    criticizing the President.

RG, it's called living beyond your means.

It's an American national passtime (and a very risky one). Not only at the government level, but at an individual level too.

    1. People like to live beyond their means, this is what happens.

    2. Rich folk in foreign countries are buying our debt from loan companies. This has nothing to do with the Bush Administration, unless you feel that Congress and the WH need to be legislating who banks can do business with.

XZ is unquotable and perfectly IGNORE-able,

    but

"tell those that gave their lives that"

The dumb -in-chief aided and abetted by mind-bogglingly incompetent Rummy plus the hawks in the WHIG, plus Wolfowitz/Perle/Feith and of course the ever-present puppet-meister head are responsible for the PHONY Repug Iraq war and for the wasted lives and pointless injuries of the US military in Iraq.

The truth doesn't depend on who says it, to whom, or why. The truth is the truth.

Similarly, the USA achieved absolutely nothing in VN, another war of choice against a non-threatening country that ended in total disaster.

50K lives and 250K injuries WASTED in VN, all for the desk-jockeys' "domino theory", which was perfectly disproven when VN fell and the rest of Indo-China didn't go communist or under Chinese or Russian influence.

One thing that the Bush administration CAN 100% control is the amount of debt issued. All it has to do is get the rubber-stampers, er, I mean congress, on board with a balanced budget.

We have racked up a trillion or two more debt and suddenly the interest payments are coming due.

    DUH.

The Republicans have betrayed their fiscal conservatives and embraced their social radicals.

If you aren't alarmed, you haven't been paying attention.
