    The Rain Delay
By Josh Bacott :: October 12, 2006 Email Link To Friend Printer Friendly Comment on Column

When you’re talking about an event like Game 1 of an NLCS in which your favorite team is playing, the game being postponed due to rain is a worst-case scenario. Sure, it could potentially have some positive series altering implications on the pitching rotation, but I’m selfish. I waited all week long for Wednesday night and when it arrived, I spent the evening watching an American League Game that served only as a cruel reminder that the game I really wanted to see wasn’t on (not to mention I had to listen to Lou Piniella broadcast it).

Of course, no one really cares what an average St. Louis Cardinals fan did with his night after word came down that the game was being postponed. The real question is, what did the players do with their unexpected off night? They prepare all week to play in a game and suddenly they find themselves with a free night in the Big Apple.

So how did they spend it? Here’s how…

Jeff Weaver – Kicked back, put his iPod on the playlist he calls “Weav’s Grungapalooza” and just smoked.

Tony LaRussa – Engaged in a three hour heads up “Paper, Rock, Scissors” match with Dave Duncan to see which one would be sleeping on the floor in their hotel room Wednesday night.

Tim McCarver – Headed to Scores immediately upon hearing the game was cancelled. Proceeded to blow $5,000 explaining the benefits of the double switch to a dancer named Majestic. Passed out while eating a bratwurst in the cab ride back to his hotel at 4:00am.

John Franco – Still trying to figure out why he didn’t make the Mets NLCS roster.

David Eckstein – Walked around Times Square, wearing his newly purchased styrofoam Statue of Liberty hat and hit every single spot on his “Explore New York” tour map.

Jim Edmonds – Four words. Shop till you drop.

Paul Lo Duca - Managed to lose $32,000 betting on a Japanese steeplechase race being broadcast at the local OTB at 3:30am.

Jeff Suppan – Dressed up in the clown suit that he brings with him on every road trip and juggled on the sidewalk, earning $13.09 from impressed onlookers.

Darren Oliver – Balanced his checkbook and when he was done, enjoyed a hearty laugh at the Cardinals expense knowing that he banked $394,444 for each win he had when he played in St. Louis in 1999.

Jose Valentin – Did what he does on every Wednesday night – groomed his mustache.

David Wright – Put on his leather bomber jacket and headed to the diner to share an apple pie and a malt with his girl, then caught a movie at the drive-in.

Pedro Martinez – Signed the final papers on his recent black market purchase of a Dominican midget, whom he has decided to name Rico. Because really, is there anything more fun than a Dominican midget?

Albert Pujols – Put his full uniform on, es and eye black included, and stared at a picture of Tom Glavine for six consecutive hours without blinking.

Tom Glavine – Crossword puzzles. All night long.

Ronnie Belliard – Had absolutely no idea that the game got rained out until 7:30 Thursday morning.

    thats good stuff

    Especially Edmonds.

Im suprised that others have thought the same as me that he might be a tad uh, sexual.

David Wright does look like some kid from the 50s

Jeff Weaver, all the Cards fans in STL call him oli, so that joke makes sense too
