Hard Disk Help

My 120GB Hard Disk crashed on my Mac recently. I have tried about three different data recovery software packages including Norton Disk Doctor. None of them worked.

OSX wants me to initialize the drive but I think if I do that, I lose everything I had on there.

Any suggestions?

I had so much music on that drive that it will take me hours to import everything back into Itunes. Plus I had Itunes just the way I wanted it.

Can you slave it to another PC and just burn all your crap before you format?

Occasionally the PRAM can become corrupt and cause problems with your computer. If you are experiencing problems that have resisted other attempts at troubleshooting, you can sometimes solve them by "zapping" the PRAM. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Hold down the Cmd, Option, p , and r keys while starting or restarting your computer. This will automatically restart your computer a few seconds after it powers on.

2. Keep holding down the Cmd, Option, p , and r keys, and allow your computer to restart seven times. After the seventh time, let your computer power up and boot normally.

3. You may need to go in and change some of your settings, as they will be reset to factory defaults.

Before the HD crashed, the 120 gig was the master and I also had an 80 gig that was a slave. Since the 120 gig wasn't booting, I changed the pins and the ribbon connection to make the 80 gig the master and the 120 gig the slave. That is how I am using my computer right now.

I tried using data recovery software on the 120 gig as the slave but the software can't recognize anything on the disk. Like I said, OSX wants me to initialize it.

I will try zapping the PRAM like you suggested.

I have been meaning to buy a portable HD to backup everything. I definitely will do so if I have to start all over again.

i would try disk warrior to repair the drive, it's the best mac os HDD utility bar none.

did you install the DRP to the 80gb drive ? then it shouldve worked.

unless you installed it to 120gb then it overwrites it, you end up losing the files.
