A San Antonio man pleaded guilty Thursday to a charge of possessing child pornography — movies a federal judge called "trash."
George Herman "Skip" Wenglein Jr. entered the plea as part of a pre-indictment deal in which prosecutors dropped another charge alleging Wenglein, 46, sent an undercover FBI agent in Buffalo, N.Y., computer videos of adults engaged in sexual acts with children.
Wenglein, who is out on bond and in a physical rehabilitation facility, faces up to 10 years in prison and a lifetime of federal supervision when U.S. District Judge Fred Biery sentences him in February.
The FBI arrested Wenglein in June after serving a search warrant at his home in gated Oakwell Farms in March 2005.
The allegations of his federal criminal case have stunned those closest to him. Wenglein's wife filed for divorce in June and obtained restraining orders against him.
Wenglein's lawyers said the fallout from the criminal case caused Wenglein to try to take his own life by shooting himself in the head on June 16, 2005. He requires around the clock care, is in a wheelchair and may not be able to walk again, his attorneys said.
"I think any grown person that finds it necessary to view child pornography has a problem," Alan Brown, one of his lawyers, said, adding that Wenglein is undergoing therapy.
Wenglein is the son of the late George Herman Wenglein Sr., one of the founders of the Luby's cafeteria chain. The younger Wenglein had worked for the company until it moved its headquarters from San Antonio to Houston in 2004, Luby's officials said.
The search warrant affidavit — kept secret for a year and a half — was recently unsealed, revealing details of his crime that are more explicit than in previous court pleadings.
The affidavit also contains allegations that Wenglein, an ex-band teacher in Lubbock, harassed two former teen female students by calling them repeatedly with sexual intentions. Wenglein was charged in one of those cases in 1990 and pleaded guilty to a harassment charge. He was sentenced to 180 days of deferred adjudication and was fined $300, according to court records and Brown.
Brown told the judge that he plans to argue for leniency for Wenglein partly based on his condition. The judge said that could backfire for Wenglein should Assistant U.S. Attorney Mary Nelda Valadez counter Brown's arguments by asking the judge to look at the videos himself.
"So far I haven't had to look at this trash," Biery said. "The descriptions are bad enough. ... These were toddlers. These weren't even teenagers. I'm just giving you fair warning."

It's always lovely when it turns out to be people you have connections to. My DARE officer was involved in that ginourmous SAPD drug scandal however many years ago and we were like "Well ain't that some ?" Some crap went down with a drama teacher at my high school the year after I graduated, but it was kept tight lipped because the administrators were paid off.
