The libertarian Senate candidate in Montana, Dan Jones, was so stupid he thought he was running for Governor! He sent a letter to supporters talking about how, as governor, he would limit government, and use his veto power. This idiot got 10,000 votes - Conrad Burns lost by less than 3,000 votes!

The "conservative independent" Senate candidate in Virginia, Gail "the rail" Parker, had one plank (or rail) in her platform - more railroads in Virginia. She said she would withdraw if Allen would promise to spend exhorbitant sums of money on railroads - he didn't, she didn't. This "winner" got 26,000 votes - and Allen is trailing right now by less than 8,000 votes!

Shouldn't there be a higher standard for candidates of third parties?

As long as people are dumb enough to vote for them, how can you possibly deny them the chance to run? Porn stars were running for governor in California. There is not way to deny them without being discriminatory.

Also, if those guys took votes away from the Dems in those states, I would go out on a limb and say you would not be upset by the low 'standards.'

Like as in letting Kinky Friedman siphon off votes?

If Kinky had not taken votes from Chris Bell - we could have a different governor today. Democrats can't be too happy about that.

I don't think Kinky voters would have voted for Bell in large enough numbers to make up the difference in the race.

Directly? No, but the race would have been closer which would have = more money. Considering how many money troubles the Bell campaign had, more money would have been a huge factor.

    Kinky screwed the pooch.

Dan Jones? Wasn't he the candidate who was ranting about black helicopters and chip implants and the I-quote "One World Communist Government" during the senatorial debates?

Well, that's what you get for having the system that you have.

Burns is a crooked mother er. I'm glad he lost, however it happened. The K-street project is but one of the legs of the Republican table that collapsed this election.

    Don't cry for k-street.

When corps can realize $Bs in subsidies and tax breaks and tariff protection, reduced royalites, they will always spend $Ms on lobbyists to buy legislators. It doesn't matter which party.

    Campaign finance reform? bull

    Congressional ethics reform? bull

The system is broken and compromised beyond repair, much more due to these 12 years of Repugs than the Dems.
