That wasn't the ball. The same thing will happen if you shoot with top spin and hit the dead back (arm of the rim) and that's exactly what happened with Carters shot.

Even Carter says that if that had been the old ball it wouldnt have gone in. Its mentioned twice in this article alone. It is pretty obvious that the new ball plays differently
