He'd have terrific stats (like tonight against the Kings) and it would keep us from losing some games during the year. If only if only...

We would have broken the '96 Bulls 72-10 record years ago. I can't even count the number of times we've lost close games, all due to poor FT shooting, especially during the regular season.

You do realize that he shot close to or at 80% one year and they didn't even get a whiff of the record, don't you?

I actually didn't know that, thanks. And it was a bit of sarcasm/exaggeration on my part. I'm just saying I can remember tons of losses due to piss poor FT%.

Yeah but he didn't have an elite backcourt that year...

That's what I was going to say. He shoots about 8 free throws a game. So 60% to 75% would only mean about 1 more point per game.

    @ Kori and JimCS.

I thought the exact same thing.

I've seen people say that Shaq would of broken scoring records had he been able to shoot 75% on FT's. He would average like 1.5ppg more.

I think as long as Tim continues to work with chip, he will improve.

Don't forget to include the influence that bad FT shooting nights have on the rest of Duncan's game -- granted there are exceptions to this suggestion as well.

If Duncan is 'on' at the stripe... confidence permeates to the rest of his game; his agressiveness goes up, his rebounding and overall defense is better. When he's on a FT slump however, Duncan tends to be more tentative on offense.

Having said that I believe it to be more complex than just taking his FT attempts per game value and incrementally adding a value based on a percentage increase.

Seven of the last eight champions were in the bottom five in free-throw percentage. Shaq shot like 35% in the playoffs last year.

Free throw percentage is overrated. Getting to the line is what matters.

    I agree.

Getting to the line means that you are getting the opponent in foul trouble. Those players in foul trouble are not near as effective in playing defense after they are in foul trouble, so it follows that the rest of the team can exploit those players, thus it leads to non FT points as well.

If TD can get his % to 68%-71% , which I think he will, then he will not worry about getting to the line any longer.

The trouble with Duncan's FTs isn't that he is a 60% FT shooter but it's that he has some really bad games at the FT line.
If it happens during a game 7, it can be a real problem.

Yeah, those 1-for-10 type of games that pop up every once in a while would be deadly in a critical situation.
