Gingrich raises alarm at event honoring those who stand up for freedom of speech

MANCHESTER – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich yesterday said the country will be forced to reexamine freedom of speech to meet the threat of terrorism.

Gingrich, speaking at a Manchester awards banquet, said a "different set of rules" may be needed to reduce terrorists' ability to use the Internet and free speech to recruit and get out their message.

"We need to get ahead of the curve before we actually lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade," said Gingrich, a Republican who helped engineer the GOP's takeover of Congress in 1994.

Gingrich spoke to about 400 state and local power brokers last night at the annual Nackey S. Loeb First Amendment award dinner, which fetes people and organizations that stand up for freedom of speech.

Would somebody remind Reich-leader Gingrich that Dubya already lost a city?

"lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade"

dubya already stood by while the jihadists got ready to hit Manhattan. Internet had very little to do with that.

Newt baby, a minor detail: which weapon can the terrorists deliver that will take out a US city?

This is just right-wing scare-mongering, self-serving headline grabbing, pandering to the dumb rabble/sheeple.

A much bigger contribution to terrorists' success, as we saw pre-9/11 and ever since (the ing FBI didn't even listen to its own people, never mind work with the NSA or CIA), is the lack of coordination and info sharing between the state and federal security agencies, that are more interested in turf-protection and bureaucracy than making America secure .

Address that, Newt, and I might give you a tiny bit of credibilty.

The terrorist have already suckered the Repugs into Iraq and Afghanistan where they are doing much, much more damage to the USA, which will continue for years, than OBL did to the WTC. There's no need to "take out" a US city.

Perhaps Gingrich was referring to the free speech exercised by the fightin' 101st Keyboarders when they demanded and got congress to publish Saddam's old nuclear weapons blueprints on the internet for all (including Iran) to see.
