not surprising.

AUSTIN – Texas freshman quarterback Jevan Snead has asked for a release from his scholarship in order to transfer, a source close to Snead said Wednesday.
Snead's availability for Texas' bowl game could be in question because Snead wants to enroll at a new school in January, the source said.
That would leave Texas with starter Colt McCoy and walk-on third-string QB Matt McCoy, who has never attempted a pass in a college game. The only other scholarship quarterback on the team is Sherrod Harris of Arlington Bowie, who is redshirting.
The source said TCU was a leading candidate to land Snead, a Parade All-American from Stephenville, although the source said Snead would like to take visits to other schools once he is released from his scholarship.
Snead completed 26 of 49 passes (53.1 percent) for 371 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions in backup duty this season. Snead will have to sit out a year after transferring, but because he played this season, he can use his transfer year as a redshirt season and still have three years of eligibility left.
Snead lost the battle for starting quarterback to Colt McCoy, who was getting consideration for Heisman Trophy votes before suffering a stinger in the first quarter of a loss at Kansas State.
Colt McCoy set a school record for TD passes in a season with 27 and has throw seven interceptions.
Snead initially committed to Florida but changed to Texas after top high school recruit Tim Tebow committed to Florida.
i saw that, UT could be in a real tight spot if colt can't play and snead has already transferred.
This is some funny . Snead originally committed to Florida then changed his mind when Tebow signed there. Then he couldn't beat out a 2A redshirt frosh QB once in Austin? And now he's bailing on his team before their bowl game when Colt left on a stretcher less than a week ago.
I don't give a if Jevan's a former Parade All-American or not. He's quitting on his current team when they need him now more than ever, and that shows some serious character issues. If he's worrying about transferring for the spring semester, it's not like the Horns are playing in a January bowl game. Chris Simms, also a former All-Everything high school QB, didn't transfer when he wasn't named the immediate starter over some kid with less talent that was winning games. He busted his ass in the weight room and in practice and made this same head coach make a difficult decision. (Of course, the media situation didn't hurt either.)
If he winds up at TCU (and the Star Telegram apparently thinks that's what's happening), good riddance. The Frogs play UT in Austin next year.
That's technically true. But when Snead committed ot UT, VY hadn't yet announced he was going pro. So Snead figured that Colt's 1-year headstart in learning the system would be moot - Snead would have a year to catch up to Colt while VY closed out his own eligibility. Obviously that didn't happen, and last Spring/Summer wasn't enough for Snead to make up the ground on Colt.
I don't believe that's official yet.
Applewhite was a year ahead of Simms - that's the difference. Even if Major went on to win 3 Heisman trophies, Simms was still guaranteed to get his shot eventually. This is why USC is able to keep stockpiling 5-star QB's - they each know they'll get a chance at some point.
Colt and Snead are both freshman. It was going to be a lot harder for Snead to beat out Colt now. Remember how everytime Simms threw a pick people would groan for Major? It would be the same (or worse) if Snead was starting next year and Colt was backing him up. Then imagine another 2 years of that. No way any UT fan should ever have expected both Snead and Colt to stick around.
I don't see why this matters for next year - Snead's not eligible to play for a 1A team until the following year due to transfer rules.
The only issue I have - like you - is with the timing. It really sucks this came out now instead of after the bowl. But the writing's on the wall that he's got a tough road ahead of him at UT. Either this 5-star recruit becomes the next Matt Nordgren, or he unseats Colt and spends the next few years having to look over his shoulder. You really can't blame him for wanting a fresh start.
Well as UT fans, we're obviously disappointed about our bowl prospects. But I find it hard to find fault with Jevan's decision.
^ Saw this coming a while back, most Horn fans I know (myself included) thought Snead would be out of here once Colt really locked down the starting QB spot. Hate to see Snead go, but I can't really fault him for looking for more of a playing opportunity. I'm also not too worried about the QB spot since we've got Brantley and Chiles coming in-both are 5 star QB recruits, with Brantley being ranked as the #2 QB prospect in the entire country. Chiles could possibly be moved to WR unless he makes a strong case for playing QB. Good luck to Snead, I think he's got some real potential as a QB.
Even if he does R/S, Brantley very well could be the next real mega star @ QB for UT.
We've all seen how quick a QB can go down with an injury.
I think this may change Brantley's mind on R/S.
IMO Brantley could beat out Colt in 2 yrs.
ing good, i'd rather UT lose in their bowl game than see that ing loser in a UT uniform again. Snead is the biggest abortion of a quarterback since Bucky Richardson. This season is already a dismal dismal failure, we've blown big bowl games before in 'successful' seasons so i'd rather play colt and or matt instead of seeing Snead's suck ass on the field ever again.
I didn't realize Sherrod was redshirting, no wonder they didn't put him in the Kansas State game.
Correction, Chris Simms was the biggest abortion of a quarterback and still is... Gradowski from Toledo is even better than he is for Tampa Bay
^ Dio, don't discount this Chiles kid. I've watched some of his high school video and the kid is simply amazing on the field, reminds me a bunch of VY. He played QB full time for the first time this season and put up some impressive stats on a pretty average team. He has big time speed in the open field and a pretty strong arm as well. Now, I don't think he's as polished as Brantley, but man when you look at those raw athletic attributes he has.....................it's going to be interesting to see how things shake out at the QB spot.
Also, Brantley and his dad have both said that they plan for him to RS his first year at UT, want to give him some time to adjust to the college game and also improve his physical size/strength. He's kind of a skinny kid right now, one year on the weights and conditioning should help him.
I long for the days of watching Simmba, scared less, throwing interceptions against OU.![]()
Chiles reminds me of Reggie Bush more than VY. I dont know if he has Reggie's agility, he hasn't been playing compe ion to show if he does, but he has that acceleration and breakaway ability.
VY was nowhere near as quick as this kid.
Chiles at QB just wont work though, unless we wanna Tebow our offense and become the s of the ncaa. I wouldn't mind him as a Ramonce Taylor type RB/WR combo. But no matter what happens, come game time, Greg Davis is still calling plays for the team so he will never reach true potential.
You could put Peyton Manning on this team today and Greg Davis would find a way to screw it up.
What an![]()
Chiles video HERE. I saw an even better one on youtube earlier this season but I can't find it.
I guess I better clarify my venom for Jevan Snead for you, reydawg. When he committed and left Stephenville to enroll spring semester, I was convinced that he would be the Horns' solution at QB for a long time. Colt's a stud, don't get me wrong, but I couldn't believe that Jevan the All-American went head-to-head with Texas 2A MVP McCoy all spring and all preseason and couldn't beat him out for the job.
Now after two straight losses and Colt nicked up, Jevan announces that he's transferring. Maybe he's trying to help the program out by not having to waste the coaching staff's time and effort preparing him for duty in the bowl game. I don't know - I figure it's more noble to bust one's ass and try to beat out the in bent using hard work and your All-America-caliber talent than to jump ship on a 9-3 team one year removed from a national championship.
I know there's more than enough blue-chip talent both incoming and already on the Forty Acres to cushion this blow, but it still irritates me. John David Booty graduated from high school an entire year early - in '02, right before Carson Palmer left - to enroll at SC and this is his first season starting. Why? Leinart beat him out, plain and simple. Now Booty's probably going to play for a national le in a little over a month. He could have transferred to Louisiana Tech or something and he didn't.
If the prospect of PT is more important than sacking up and contributing to your team in a time of need, then good riddance. Oh yeah, and I wouldn't suggest TCU for a prospective new school. Even with Ballard leaving, the Frogs still have Andy Dalton from Katy (Houston's HS player of the year in '05) rarin' to go next season.
j-6 brings an important (and probably most common) point of view, that ends up with the same conclusion as mine: good ing riddance
i agree with you 100% but i take your first paragraph then apply that to the fact that he blew it against KState when our defense was giving him bad ass field position, and now i just hate his ass and am glad he is gone.
McCoy, Harris, Brantley, Chiles--we're set at QB. Good Riddance. In fact, this is probably a blessing in disguise cuz it encourages Chiles to honor his verbal commitment.
Why is Bucky an abortion of a quarterback? Because he kicked your team's ass?Snead is the biggest abortion of a quarterback since Bucky Richardson.
I actually dont know who he is but i saw ChumpDumper mention him and the timbre of his name made me laugh my ass off
Bucky Richardson is like the Major Applewhite of College Station. Hardcore Ags would be less offended if you took a piss in the collie cemetery than calling out ol' Bucky.
I was a sop re (I think) in high school when he had that awful game in the Cotton Bowl against Florida State. It's been a while, but seeing a #7 in maroon and white running the option in '06 sure reminded me of the guy that was doing it fifteen years ago.
hmm, i chose not to respond to that idiotic comment. Bucky was a great leader as is McGee...option all over t.u.'s defense anyone?
except that you did. it wasn't really even an insult to bucky. both qbs were mediocre and got put on pedestals. my only real memory of bucky is of oiler fans clamoring for him to start over moon, getting their wish and instantly regretting it.
typical dumbass response. what does Bucky's college career have to do with his pro?...wait, let me tell you....nothing. Bucky was a winner as is McGee, i could care less about their stats or your opinions on them.
...and i did not respond to that comment, i responded to j-6 responding, genius.
yep, he stuck with his decision. i am sure when leinart announced he was returning after the 2004 season, he thought about the what ifs. now look where he is. meanwhile, rocky hinds transferred to unlv when he could have been the #1 qb during spring practice and challenged booty and sanchez during fall camp. mark sanchez, who everyone thinks will be alot better, is patiently waiting and learning just like booty did (he will have 2 years left after next season).
bucky, like major, was a cult scrub. leaders don't have to be great, or even good players. you responded to the comment, but through a filter - so i'm a dumbass?![]()
Still can't believe Rocky xfrd.
Supposed to be a real good guy to.
When I stayed in LA I was about 5 blocks from his high school. VERY small private school St Bernard is. Ahhh, the nights in mid Sep walking around the Berger and Veragua neighborhood for about 90min with a 6 pack of Pacifico and a hoody just shotting the with my bud.
Awesome area @ night if you stay west of Lincoln and closer to the Playa area.
