An excerpt from Richard Justice's blog at the Houston Chronicle site (chron.com). I like it:

I wasn't impressed with The $76-Million Dollar Man at Saturday's news conference. (He'll become The $108-Million Man when he passes a physical and signs his new contract.) He came off as a whiny baby. He was shocked the Astros didn't step up. Shocked? Give me a break. Some of these guys have something wrong inside their brains. Either that or they're so isolated from the real world that they see themselves as the center of the universe.

For a guy who spent two months twiddling his thumbs, he expected everything to be on a fast track once he said he was ready. He must have some serious Christmas shopping to do. I think the Astros should have offered The $76-Million Man more dough, but they did offer $12 million. That's not an insignificant amount of money. Too bad it shocked Andy Pet te. I'm certain they would have gone to $14 million if the issue of the second year hadn't been there. I'm sorry The $76-Million Man is shocked at just getting a $12-million offer. I feel terrible for him.

Among the more idiotic things he said Saturday was this quote sent to me from the New York Times:

I know New York is where God wants me and where he's put me for this year.

These guys should hire someone to tell them when to shut their traps. I hope finding The $76-Million Man a place to pitch wasn't high on God's to-do list.

Good take all around. Still, for someone criticizing another for whining, he comes off as pretty bitter over the entire situation. #1 rule in sportswriting is don't make things personal. If you're going to be sarcastic, then make the piece intentionally humorous. If you're going to try and pound home some valid points, don't undermine your message with sarcastic (and unnecessary) personal attacks.

It's either or. While I certainly agree that Pet e was an idiot, constantly refering to him as the 76-million dollar man set a tone of bitterness throughout the entire piece.

Whiney ing article. Houston fans need to get over it already. You guys are taking it wayyyyyyy to personally. It's the way the buisness works. Why wouldn't he want to go back to NY? The Yankees have a better chance of winning it all, Pet te started his career in NY and was a Yankee for 9 years where he won 4 les and went to 6 World Series, plus they offered him more cash. He gave you guys 3 great years including a World Series appearence. He doesn't owe Houston anything.

He's a Yankee now, so deal with it.

He, Oswalt and Clemens were the only pitchers worth a for Houston. He helped get The Astros to their first World Series, sure he was injured for a bit, but he still did a good job for The Astros. He and the other starting pitchers would have won more games if it wasn't for the ty offense.
