we're actually a fourth through the season.
In the West;
1. Dallas Mavericks: Great coach (Johnson), Big time superstar that thrives under pressure (Nowitzki) and a strong, reliable second scorer (Howard)
2. Phoenix Suns: MVP (Nash), Amare rounding into form, two solid tweeners that rebound (Diaw/Marion)
3. Lakers: Best coach in the NBA (Jackson), best player in the NBA (Bryant) and a supporting cast that doesn't get enough respect.
4. Utah- leading candidate for this year’s MVP (Boozer), great coach (Sloan, emerging superstar PG (Williams)- thoroughly dominated the Spurs.
5. The Spurs
The Spurs are not as good as either of these teams right now. Nevermind the it’s early crap- we’re a third through the season and San Antonio hasn’t proven they can beat these teams. They needed an 11 for 11 night from Oberto to beat Phoenix who were still integrating Amare at the time. Boozer is a better player at this stage of his career than Duncan. A healthy Kirilienko kills us and Deron Williams is light years ahead of Tony Parker. What’s more alarming is that the Spurs could have won these games but were OUTCOACHED down the stretch by their opponents- Pop’s fourth quarter line-up vs Dallas, Pop’s calling four down twelve straight times against Utah, Pop going small against the Lakers etc……
If I were you, I would seriously think about lowering expectations for two reasons; a) I used to think Tim Duncan could make up for Pop’s stupidity- he’s just not that good anymore and b) Gregg Popovich is scary stupid.
Same as last year- we’ll make the playoffs and lose a close series to one of the these four teams mainly because our coach can't make in-game adjustments. Seeing Duncan turn into a scoutmaster last night and get violated by the likes of Kwame Brown just makes things worse.
Who else would LOVE to see PJ Carlesimo coach the Spurs for at least 15 games? If, for no other reason that to just see what could be different? Pop has lost sight of the forest throught the trees. Do you really think Avery Johnson would be starting Jerry Stackhouse if he was shooting 30%?!
we're actually a fourth through the season.
21 games / 82 game season = 25.6%
25.6% < 33.3%
First, let's get our emperical data correct.
Second, have we become the type of fans that when our team is playing +.700 ball overall and on the road? Don't turn into Yankee fan.
When did PJ become such a great coach?
He sucked last time he was a headcoach in the NBA and I have no desire to see him become the coach of this team while Pop is available. Pop isn't perfect, but he's better than anything else we can get right now. He's definitely better than Carlesimo.
If Pat Riley or Phil Jackson become available, I'll be all for dumping Pop in favor of them....but since they aren't...I'm not about to dump him for some guy that couldn't even win the big one heading a major college program.
Change just for changes sake usually makes things worse, not better.
Let's trade the whole lot of them for a boatload of lottery picks, fire all the coaches, waive the owner, string up the mascot, and allow the bank to foreclose on the building.
I mean, if you think about it: when a team loses a game in LA in December, loses a game in Utah in November, loses a game at home to Dallas in November, it's definitely incapable of competing for a le. That's as easy as it gets.
Horse . We are a third through the season if they changed the number of games to 60. Every team the Spurs play compete as if it is game 7. Kobe, off a sprained ankle played 40 minutes last night. Do you think Pop would have played him 40?, when Ginobili is on his 3rd or 4th game back and plays 23? Pop coaches the same way every year. You ought to be used to it by now. Amazing that Johnson has coached less than 3 years and you call him a "great coach" He would be lost without Del Harris.
I'm pointing out patterns that don't and won't go away. Last time I checked, the NBA had about six elite teams and the rest was absolute crap so excuse me if I'm not impressed with playing .700 ball. There was a time when 'demand for excellence' meant something.
And Yankee fans have the right to complain. Their ticket prices are astronomical, their payroll is ridiculous and they don't win the big ones.....so if you're content with having a .700 winning percentage a the end of the day and watching someone else celebrate a championship, then you're an idiot.
And a lot worse grasp of defense....
I don't want Flip Saunders part two...and Sprewell loves Pop, Tim Duncan loves Pop, Manu and Parker love Pop...he must be doing something right.
Pop>Carleisimo and if you can give me some kind of evidence to prove otherwise I'll reconsider my stance.
Lame suggestion...I have zero desire to see PJ coach this team instead of Pop.
Your name again, son?
Your claim to fame is guessing the right scores in games slapnuts. Leave the real issues to the adults here and go back to the hamburger meat you have sex with- I hear it's a National Pastime in Poland.
I just got called out by someone from ing Poland.......
Old problems that won't be addressed as long as we're playing over .700 and will be compe ive in the playoffs.
That's pretty good considering we have Oberto as a starter, Finley is shooting in the 30s, we have a nutless backup PG, and it's early in the season.
I actually was not expecting us to have such a good record. i know they will only get better and have a very good chance in the playoffs. Once in the playoffs TD, and manu will take over and all these bull details ppl cry about daily will be mute.
Or moot...anyways I hope you're right.
Way to go, Walton. You've just increased the average age for "emos". The Jazz and Spurs had the best records in the NBA not one day ago. The Spurs lose a game by being careless for a 4-5 minute stretch against a team with Kobe Bryant and Lamar Odom ON THE ROAD and all of a sudden, the Spurs are 5th in the West? Not to take anything away from the Lakers, because they do play pretty decent perimeter D and they have active hands, but let's not get too emotional about an L.
Pop's teams don't start playing well together on a consistent basis until he knows what he has and they know each other better...as in February, March and April. It's not a maybe, it's a fact. It's not uncommon for teams to let-up every now and then, especially after several blow-out wins. I think TP was more interested in talking to Kobe about Eva's diamond than in taking care of the other rock.
Simmah down a bit. It's a month and a half into the NBA marathon.
One loss and they come out of the woodwork.
nkd, I couldn't have stated it better.
And while everyone is en led to their opinion, this was a bit overboard. First of all if Popovich were so incompetent, I don't think Tim Duncan and the many other players who have played under him would have regarded him so highly. I had the pleasure of getting to know Danny Ferry and some other players of late and Pop actually is my folks' neighbor, so I've met him. While I don't exactly rant with them about basketball all the time, I have gotten the impression that Pop is pretty solid and has a good basketball IQ. According to Ferry, Pop is one of the top coaches in the league.
The point is its easy to have elevated expectations when you are the fan of the winningest sports franchise in the U.S....or the world?...over the past decade or so. And while everyone has a right to maintain those expectations, we all don't have to agree with them. Having said that, I love WaltonBuysMeOff's entertaining as takes and cracks, but I mightily disagree with him here.
You lost ALL credibility with the statement that Nowitzki thrives under pressure.
See: 2006 Finals; Fitness bike
It's amazing how people knee-jerk to a couple of early season losses. I guess they don't realize that the other teams get paid to try to win as well. Plus, most of the top teams are playing with their lineups/rotations to see what works best (along with incorporating new players).
[QUOTE=phyzik]You lost ALL credibility with the statement that Nowitzki thrives under pressure.
Yeah, Dirk really melted under the pressure of that game 7 in San Antonio. I'd be the first to say Dirk was not a pressure player if I thought it was true. It's just not even remotely close to being true. He's hit too many big shots (in regular season and playoffs) for one missed free throw to change my perception.

Numerically, the Spurs tied at 6L with 4 other WC teams, with Utah alone a 5L, and Den alone a 7L.
15-6 => 59-23 season

I wish more Spurs fans could be like you. you know your . Props!

The Spurs clearly aren't the favorite anymore.
Some of you smoke to much Pop sometimes.
Step outside Pop's underwear sometime and watch a in game.
The Spurs aren't that good anymore.
Yup, total overreaction. If we do this sort of thing in mid-Feb I'll start worrying. Pop is still tinkering with the team and will be until well into January.
As for the racial slurs and sense of en lement because you're a yank, get over yourself. When was the last time the US won an international basketball le? Does that suggest to you that maybe people from all over the world know a little about the game? Wanker.
