I'm mainly looking for baseline bum's opinion here, but does anyone else have any recommendations for an EATX 24 pin power supply? i finished putting together my new core 2 duo system last night and found i needed a 24 pin connector for my motherboard. my old 500w power supply doesn't have one.

AFAIK you can use your old 20 pin Power supply.

You just leave the top pins 21-24 empty.

tried, it won't fit. i'm gonna have this for a few years, so i'll just get a proper one. i'm stuck at work till 6 though. if i ever get a fancy pciexpress card i'll need that extra connector too - the one i got is cheaper and doesn't need the extra power.

    Strange.

Are you sure you were trying to leave the top pins and not the bottom ones empty? Anyway the shape of the holes/pins will not let you mess it up - so if it doesn't fit don't force it.

The reason I find it strange is that I built 2 PCs with dual core motherboards last week and I was able to use the old 20 pin ATX power supplies that were originally in the housings. Both were GiGABYTE motherboards, and it also said clearly in the instalation/user manual that you could use either 20 or 24 pin Power supplies with a minimum power of 350W.

i have an ASUS motherboard, but yeah it didn't fit so i didn't force it. it did have one really useful feature so far, a unified connector for the case wires. you just plug them into the connector and slide them onto the motherboard pins. surprised that hadn't been done before, i have big fingers and it was always a pain to connect those case wires.

I've got to punt to Slomo on this one. I don't know a whole lot about power supplies, other than you better have a huge one or a second one if you plan on putting a GeForce 8800 card in your system. I've always used Antec power supplies in my own systems. I couldn't tell you if dropping those extra few dollars on a PC Power and Cooling power supply is worth it though.
