Sweet thread! where was this idea for football season?
I hereby nominate this thread as the official 2006-2007 Pac 10 basketball thread. I pe ion that we (Pac 10 fans) henceforth adopt this thread for any and/or all future basketball talk of said conference. Reasons being:
1) The Pac 10 is the best basketball Conference in the NCAA this year, so this thread will serve as a constant reminder to all non-Pac 10 fans that they're in the presence of greatness.
2) It would really piss off all the Pac 10 haters we have on this forum to have this thread staring them in the face everytime they log on to the forum.
That being said, I'd like to open these discussion by telling Kori; your Bruins are goin down when my Wildcats come to town.![]()
The Ducks will beat UCLA on Saturday. And the Beavs will beat USC.
Tons of Pac 10 action today on FSPAC
UCLA @ Oregon at 2pm (Eastern)
USC @ Oregon St at 6pm
Arizona @ WSU at 10.
Looks like taking down the Christams lights might have to wait one more day.![]()
I am not a fan of the Pac-10 per se (which to most here, automatically makes me a hater) but I am a huge fan of college basketball and a stronger Pac-10 makes for a better March Madness.![]()
Oregon will not beat UCLA and OSU will most likely lose to USC. OSU hoops has been a mess since Gary Payton left in 89-90...ONE winning season since then (1 and out in the NIT).
If WSU can give UCLA a run for their money, I'm sure Oregon can do the same. And you never know about USC. They might just...well, pull a USC and lose to OSU.
WSU is in it's own little world. Slowdown basketball from and now his son Bennett. Oregon looking good so far, but UCLA will turn it up here in the next 10 minutes.
And UCLA goes down in the Pit. Someone should slap Ben Howland for for not scheduling some tough road games in December. Or ANY road games in December for that matter. His team would've been a lot better prepared for today.
It was both a good and bad win for the Conference today. It hurts not having the nation's #1 ranked team. Still, it definately validates the Pac-10 as more than the "one-or-two teams, three in if we're lucky" conference that it has been the past three years. Top to bottom it's better. ASU and OSU aren't very good this year, but ASU certainly has a shot at a few upper-half finishes in the next four years with Sendek.
Like I said earlier...
Unquestioned: UCLA/Arizona
NCAA's ready: Oregon/Washington
NCAA's hopeful: USC/Washington State
Next year: California/Stanford
Hopefully soon: Oregon State/ASU
beaverfuzz, what's the word on Jay? Is his job status uncertain beyond this year? He's a fine coach, but he's not getting the quality of recruits it takes to compete year after year within the Pac-10. Even ASU landed Boetang off transfers and nabbed a borderline McDs AA in James Harden...
I hope he can get things together. Oregon has plenty of talent. He's going to have to do better at getting some. I hope he does so, because it would suck to be the only program not part of the upswing as every school mentioned has the young talent to be as strong the next few years as they are this year. Some teams, like an ASU or USC, even better.
This is year five of the Jay John era (year 3 on current contract) and has so far only produced one winning season, led by a walk-on son of a former NBA player (Maurice Luca's kid David). There's promise in the young back court, but I would hate to see the same team on the court next year minus Jeffers and Jones who are OSU's only inside presence.
The knock on the state of Oregon for football is that there's so little Div I-A talent graduating from high schools each and every year. That's not at all true for hoops, Kevin Love and Kyle Singler were two of the top 10 prospects in the country and neither gave OSU or UO much of a look in the recruiting process.
I say he gets one more year to bring in talent (has at least three schollies to give out) to at least put a good young starting five for next year. This year is going to be a long one however, maybe 2-4 in-conference victories.
even Brent Barry came to play for OSU (and lost each year) so it can be done. Need some quality big men (which is supposed to be a Jay John trait) to have any chance at keeping his job for next year.
Well, Jay got a good one today...

CORVALLIS, Ore. – C.J. Giles has transferred to Oregon State and is joining the men’s basketball program, head coach Jay John announced today.
Giles, a 6-foot-11, 240-pound center originally from Seattle, is transferring from Kansas. He began classes at OSU today (the first day of winter quarter). He is not on scholarship at this point and is considered a walk-on.
He may practice with the Beavers immediately and take part in all other team-related activities, but won’t be eligible to play until after Dec. 8, 2007, due to NCAA transfer regulations. He will have a little less than two full seasons of eligibility at OSU, including two complete Pacific-10 Conference seasons.
He's a big-time talent. Loony, but maybe the change of scenery will him good. It's not like he's the only recent goofball at Kansas...
Arizona was big on him when he was in high school. I originally committed to Miami, then, when a certain assistant coach was fired and joined Kansas, he followed him.
Said assistant coach has been investigated for years for "benefit" packages. Hopefully this part of Giles' baggage was lost in transit!

Yeah, I saw... It's too effin' close to my moniker... I originally said Jay, then added John to specify, then saw I placed it wrong and hoped no one would notice since it was said correctly in the article text beneath... oh well.
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...ll-cover_x.htmIt's the best league in the country right now," ESPN analyst Doug Gottlieb says. "And I don't think it's even close.
Uh no, his name is JAY JOHN. How's Kent Ernie working out for Oregon, his adultries have been swept under the rug with this 14 or 15-1 start.
My bad. He's such a lousy coach I can't even get his name straight.
Ernie Kent seems to be doing quite well right now, doesn't he? I don't particularly like him, but the Ducks have a uva team this year.
FYI: I'm more of a Beaver fan than a Duck fan. I went to OSU my freshman year and my brother and sister are both OSU grads. I'm a PSU grad.
Looks like Oregon is about to steal a win from Arizona at Arizona. Bad loss for the Wildcats. They had this one, but lost it in the final minutes. Brooks killed them late.
I don't think the teams were ever seperated by more than 6 points so I wouldn't say "they had this one". It was a great game.
I believe they had a five point lead with just over two minutes. Arizona is pretty good at closing games out, or at least have been, so when that time came, I was confident. Brooks' three was a killer. I mean, damn... Both it and the eventual game-winner were incredably difficult shots and both went in off the bounce. Arizona's lone good Pac-10 win at Washington no longer looks that impressive. They are still #2 in RPI, but they really need to beat UCLA, Oregon and USC once each and going to Oregon and beating the Ducks is going to be a tall order.
Pac-10 is dominant this year. ASU should be a lot better, but they keep losing close ones... especially ones at home. They played Oregon really tough and just hit a dry stretch late in the game to let OSU escape. As long as they don't pull an 0'fer in conference like A&M did 3 years ago, then I'll be happy. Those young guys are going to be good the next few years and Sendeck pulled in a couple of quality recruits from Cali.
With Duke and other ACC schools struggling, I'm close to saying the Pac-10 and Big-12 are the top 2 conferences (if not, then at least in the top 4 with Big East, ACC and maybe Big 10) in the nation right now.
Pac-10 is tops (UCLA, Oregon, Arizona, Washington State, USC should all be ranked), followed by the SEC (Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas... plus Kentucky), then the Big 12 (Kansas, A&M and Texas). ACC (NC, Clemson, Duke, VaTech) probably follows next, then Big East (top top bottom depth) and lastly Big-10 (Wisconsin and Ohio State). Them's the power conferences.
