Despite repeated denials, the Knicks and Francis have discussed a buyout, but neither side can agree on how much money it will take to make the veteran guard disappear.

A source familiar with the negotiations said that Francis, who is working out in Houston, might yet rejoin the team if a settlement is not reached, but that Francis and the Knicks both believe that a clean break would best serve both parties. The Knicks have little need for Francis because the Knicks are committed to Jamal Crawford as their shooting guard. Francis does not want to be a backup.
I know this thread might be a bit premature because IT is denying any buyout, but the rumors are persistent and Steve isn't with the team.

It is clear the Spurs have two problems; back up PG and rebounding. If Steve Francis, who has a home in nearby Houston, becomes available, would he be an answer to the Spurs back-up PG issue?

The Spurs could sign him for the pro-rated vet min, waive one of the other PG (vaughn), and use Williams' contract to address the other issue of rebounding (Ely?).

Good or bad idea? Possible or impossible?

Sorry, man. Both threads are there for a reason. The Spurs have a need and Webber/Francis potentially fill that need. They just come with obvious risks and cost a roster spot.

I understand the desire for Webber. Francis is far too much a headcase.

He's been a malcontent his entire career. There hasn't been a single team that's ever been sorry to see him go.

Talent wise he would be a useful guy to have around. He's a pretty good ball handler and could be a go to scorer off the bench. I just doubt he'd be happy with that as his role. The Spurs don't really have anything to lose by taking a look at him but my gut says he's not going to land in San Antonio.

Why in the world did the Knicks trade for him last season if they had no intent to either keep him or trade him? Isiah Thomas is an idiot.

Francis and Bowen together in the 1st practice.

Could be just fine. Incredibly enough I don't know if Francis ever said a single thing about the incident.

I can't see him wanting to come off the bench. In fact, the article said he doesn't want to be a backup. Even if we wanted him (highly unlikely), he wouldn't want us.

Yeah I saw that, and though it gave me pause, I can see how it might be in context. He might not want to get paid $20M to be a back up on a horrible team, but if he were signed to the league min and knowing that he'd be playing to get a ring, he might be willing to work out his ego issue. Then again...you could be right.

I suppose he could satisfy both requirements in Miami....championship contender with PG issues.

Francis does not want to be a backup.

That should answer your question about him joining the Spurs...

Bad idea. The problem--aside from money and ego issues about starting--is that Stevie Franchise has always played the PG position as a shooting guard. I can't tell you how frustrated Houston coaches and fans were over the years while watching him dribble the ball for almost the entire 24 seconds and then heaving up a shot.

You don't want a PG with that mentality, especially off the bench. He'd be constantly trying to raise his point average at the expense of the team.

He has skills but no basketball sense of what it takes to be a pg.

I agree with that. Best case is he could come in for instant offense (as opposed to Beno's 'instant suckiness'), if--Big IF--he could agree to not starting that is, but forget any notion of 'running the team.'

    Pass.

Arg...take a second to look at the negative pulse in this thread though....seriously it's interesting noting the difference between this one and the one you started. Isn't it?
