I'm not going to read that, but props for putting the work into it.
Here is the current Spurs stat before today’s game – I prefer always to use stat per/48 (Tendex) vs. per/game because it shows you in reality what a player did on the court for the actual time he played (per game stat is very misleading!). The stat per 48 min. shows you the REAL effectiveness for a player and how he contributes to the team. Each player is judged by a Tendex Index.

The important thing here is to look for the spread – the difference between Tnd/48 and PTS/48 – the more positive the spread gets, the more certain player helps the team, but not just by scoring. From the above, one the biggest contributors to our team are Tim Duncan spread of (+6.82); Francisco Elson – spread (+7.04), and that is why we are missing so much his presence, and no wonder why we beat the Mavs in game 1 because he shut down Dirk greatly! Surprisingly Horry has a positive spread too – (+7.33) – his effectiveness on the floor shows by the positive spread (it was really boosted by the 18-pt performance at Memphis recently). Horry gave up everything he had in “D” as well, but he is getting OLD – when we are looking his rebounding stat below, we will find that his TR/48 are only 10.3, less than Bonner, and far less than Oberto and Elson, which is NOT good…However, the stat shows Horry is NOT the problem for the slump of the Spurs – the only players showing positive spread above are Manu (+3.6), Barry (+4.18), Oberto (!)(+5.91), and Bruce Bowen (+1.31)…All others are NOT contributing much as we need to start with Tony Parker – Tony is second after Timmy with 28.31 pts/48 min., but his Tnd/48 Index is only 28.30, overall spread of (-0.01),it means he hasn’t contributed to the Spurs with anything else, BUT SCORING, which is pretty bad…Surprisingly Vaughn shows much better spread for the time he was on the court – (+7.17), it means he was contributing in so many ways, and if we look below the stats ASSISTS/48 we will find Vaughn with 11.2 asts/48 vs. Tony’s only 8.3. This shows us Vaughn is more effective passing the ball compare to Beno (6.4) and Tony, so he should be getting some minutes instead of Beno…Bonner shows FLAT spread, but it is positive, (+.86), so Pop should kepp him on the court…Needless to say ALL other players show NEGATIVE Spread – Finley (-1.52), and Beno (-3.05), and Williams (-0.77 – however Williams didn’t get enough playing time), therefore Pop should bench Finley and Beno FOR GOOD!!!

From the rebounding stat we could see Elson shows good stat on 0R/48 and TR/48, so the Spurs are missing him right now – he is also giving us some energy and quickness…

Dirk’s Tnd/48 is 36.17 – much better than Timmy’s. The Big 3 for Dallas Dirk, Terry and Howard show positive spread, but their real contributors are Dampier (+7.7) and Diop (+8.15) showing outstanding presence on the court for the minutes they played – the Spurs simply have NO MATCH for that currently…Jerry Stack and Devean George show negative spread, but they really didn’t play enough games to judge those numbers, and when the Playoffs come in, I am sure their numbers will change…

Dallas has 4 guys rebounding the basketball with over 12 Total Rbs (TR/48), the Spurs have only 3 – Tim, Oberto and Elson…In addition in the OR (Offensive rbs)/48 the Mavs have 4 players over 2 OR/48 as Dampier and Diop show an outstanding effectiveness on the boards – over 5 OR/48. The Spurs don’t have such players to match them…Here is your difference WHY the Mavs are controlling the boards. When we look at the blocks/48 min. we can see the Spurs have only Tim and Elson over 2 blks/48 min. compare this to the Mavs with 3 players over 2 blks as Dampier and Diop showing 2.3 and 3.9 blks per 48 …In asts/48 the Mavs show 3 players over 6 asts/48 (Terry, Harris and A. Johnson), the Spurs also have 3 (Tony, Vaughn and Beno), however Mavs guards are more athletic and strong than hours…In steals/48 the Mavs have serious advantage - 6 players are above 1.5 stls/48 (J. Howard, Harris, Stackhouse, Buckner, A. Johnson, and Mbenga), the Spurs have only 4 players (Manu, Bruce, Horry and Vaughn) – here is your difference WHY the Mavs are better in “D”…they are more quick and athletic getting to the ball and make steals…
The spurs need to trade for someone who can give them rebounding (PF), shot blocker (PF or SF), and SG who can make steals and pass the ball…We are NOT even close fellows…

I don't know - I doubt nba.com has stat per 48 min., they have stat per Game only as anyone else - use http://www.dougstats.com website shown above - it is updated every week and it is very accurate!

I don't like per minute stats at all. Minutes played per game is one of the best indicators of how valuable a player is to his team.
Thye also show all team categories - the Spurs are currently second in pts allowed per game and 2st in 3-pt shooting %
Ok, Everyone has their own opinion - per game doesn't give you the REAL effectiveness of a player and how REALLY valuable he is for the team – using spreads as well – according to this system, Finley and Beno shouldn’t be playing at ALL right now, Tony is contributing only with scoring and nothing else…PER GAME NEVER gives you the TRUE and Clear PICTURE HOW effective the player is on the court so you could manage his time – what good is for us Finley to play over 20 min. per game and delivers 3 out 9 (like today?). He is effectiveness is NEGATIVE according to per/48 min, he shouldn’t be playing at ALL, but sits in Pop’s DOGHOUSE…I have no idea WHY Pop is giving him the minutes…PERIOD!!! BTW, if you go to www.dougstats.com they show also per game stat, so you can compare…

Hey, it took you three hours to read my post.
Actually, I do know Doug Steele, sort of. We did some work together collecting NBA game stats over the Internet back in the late 80s, before there were any available on the web.
Nice work... hmmm one thing about the "steals" stat - from what I've heard/seen (I rarely get to see games), the spur's defense concentrates on making their opponents take difficult shots. They do not put much emphasis on risky defense that results in steals.
That is probably why the spur's main stat to look at on defense is the Opponent's FG%.

Dallas is killing us in that stat.
I used to play in a very compe ive adult league with this guy that used to go running to our stats person as soon as the game was over to see how he did.
We were losing games left and right but he'd be giddy because he was leading the league in scoring at like 34 per night.
He got suspended from the remainder of the league season for fighting and our team went on to win more games without him, and no one on our team averaged more than 15pts during that span.
Bottom line...looking at a player's "contribution" means squat when all is said and done. It's all about the W.
