According to Espn, SD will not fire Marty. SD offered Marty a 1 yr. extension but he refused it. Doesn't sound like he really wants to be there.

Why fire the guy who led his team to a 14-2 season with a rookie QB?
Why fire the guy who put his team in a position to win a playoff game with 3 minutes left?
Marty didn't make McCree fumble the ball. Marty didn't make Parker fumble the punt. Marty didn't make Florence commit a personal foul.

The disses they are giving you are true SanityAnnex.

    1. Dbs for the Chargers have pulled this crap twice this year at end of games, both times they had an INT and only needed to drop to the ground to end the game. Once vs Raiders and once vs Buffalo where Hart actually did fumble without being touched. Did uck Marty teach them anything, discipline them? Apparantly not as McCree is still spouting about his play being the right thing to do and "i would do the same thing over again, why should i have batted it down" a day after the game. Thats coaching. Either discipline him yourself or have a trusted vet (Donnie Edwards) ream his ass.

    2. Sanity this is not hindsight. My friends and I have been predicting Parkers meltdown since October. He has neither the stature or mental makeup for bigtime NFL playoffs, and i love it when small guys make it in the NFL. They acquired Az Hakim at the trading deadline. Myself i would not have even played Parker, but after those 1st two drops he should have been toast by any competent coach. FartyBawl leaves him in and presto, the punt screw up as well as a 3rd qtr crucial failure to come back on a would be 20 yard pass by Rivers. Assanti completely fooled, Parker stands there flat footed while ball in air and allows Assanti to close 6 yards and nip the ball just prior to arrival. High School technique.

    3. Florence immaturity i agree that could happen to any coach.

4th and 11 go for it instead of 47 yd f.g.?
end of half prevent the win defense allowing Pats td in 1 minute 58?

After all that went wrong, we still could force OT.
Check out final Chargers drive. 24 seconds allowed between play #1 and #2. All for a 4 yard pass to Gates, tackled well in bounds.

I hear what you are saying, but at some point the blame must go to the players.

On your last point, Jackson really ed up by lining up on the wrong side which cost them the 24 seconds. Mental error by a young player.

    Phil Simms

(Jan. 17, 2007) -- It was fascinating to hear all the talk heading into the Patriots-Chargers Divisional Playoff Game. With all the stories to follow -- LaDainian Tomlinson, Shawne Merriman, Tom Brady, Bill Belichick -- the tremendous undercurrent was about whether or not Marty Schottenheimer would lose his job if San Diego lost. As I read all the articles and watched people talking about it on TV, I just thought to myself, "This is just a little too over the top." For lack of a better term … tabloid journalism.
Marty Schottenheimer is now 47-33 with the Chargers in the regular season, and 200-126 overall.

And now that San Diego did lose the game, this speculation did not die down. Just the opposite, in fact. Everybody were asking me about it. People are going over every little detail of the game, looking for things they can point to as being Schottenheimer's fault.

To me the most absurd example of this is the Marlon McCree play in which the Chargers safety intercepted a fourth-down pass and then fumbled it back to New England. The coaches should have told him to knock it down, which is the criticism laid on Schottenheimer.

Absurd. First off, the only time "just knock it down" really applies is very late in the half or late in regulation. There was still plenty of time left in the fourth quarter at that point. I don't know if that would enter a player's mind at that time. McCree said he was trying to score -- what do you want him to say? It's an instinct. You intercept the ball, you run. You try to avoid tackles and score. You can't blame that on the coach.

Did they make some questionable decisions? Of course. Any time a team loses, you can second-guess the coach. As we nitpick every play, we can probably make a good argument.

But how many good things did Schottenheimer have to do for the Chargers to go 14-2 this season? How many good things did he have to do to put his team in the position they were in?

Yes, his playoff record is 5-13. I don't look at stuff like that, but I can't avoid it in this case, because that's all anyone talks about.

Of course, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning has a losing record in the playoffs -- if he loses this week, should he be replaced?

We live in such a knee-jerk society, and I understand that. But the firing of Marty Schottenheimer after a 14-2 campaign is a pretty tough subject for me to debate.

Some people might suggest that Schottenheimer's big-game history has a psychological effect. Sorry, but I can't imagine the Chargers players are thinking that the reputation of their coach is something they can't overcome. I can't even fathom that. Not only do they not take that into account, but they also understand that Schottenheimer created the atmosphere that enabled them to have the success they had.

Folks, it's just not that easy to go 14-2 in the NFL.

Will players question some of the decisions he made in the game and how he handled things? Absolutely. You question everything when you lose, especially when you have such a good team.

I think anyone watching that game saw that the Chargers do have a lot of talent. But regardless of what you think, it would be a big, big risk for a 14-2 team to change coaches.

In today's NFL, no matter how much talent you have, it doesn't take much to go from 14-2 with home-field advantage to 10-6 and playing a wild-card game on the road.

So I guess the moral of the story is that the four coaches in this weekend's conference le games should beware: You are one game away from the Super Bowl, but if you lose this weekend, someone might call for your job.

My take on Marty Schottenheimer is that he is a terrible in game coach. There is no way that the Chargers should have even been in a position to lose the game with all the talent they have. They have BY FAR the most talent in the NFL this season, and Marty blew it once again.

Going for it on that 4th down. Challenging the Mcree fumble. That first down is the difference between going for that 54 yarder and maybe getting 10 more yards. Marty got outclassed once again by a much better coach. And it'll probably happen again next season. Which is a damn shame considering they have the best offensive and the best defensive players in the game.

Oh and Philip Rivers isn't a rookie Sanity.

Tell me if this is classy. A couple of my friends who were at the game told me this. Before the game, the Patriots team was announced over the PA three separate times, and they failed to run out of the tunnel. The announcer had to do something, so he started announcing the Chargers team. Once he started announcing the Chargers players, the Patriots took the field. Brain yes, classy no.
