Helotes mulch fire finds friends as its MySpace page catches on

It's been called stinky, a trash heap, an outrage and an eyesore.

But those aren't the Helotes mulch fire's only qualities: It is also single, male, a Capricorn, and loves the movie "Backdraft," according to the fire's profile on MySpace, a popular social networking Web site.

That's right. The Helotes mulch fire has its own MySpace page, www.myspace.com/mulchfire, complete with more than 60 online pals, a grainy nighttime video of the blaze and a photo of heiress Paris Hilton wearing a T-shirt bearing her signature phrase, "That's hot." The mulch fire also has a presence on YouTube, a Web site where users have uploaded several homemade videos of the flaming heap.

"The mulch fire has made enough enemies, maybe it is time to start making some friends," said Vanessa Macias, a local TV personality listed on MySpace as a friend of the mulch fire.

Several other people listed on the site work for local talk radio station KTSA, and some suspect co-workers of creating the site.

"I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't J.T. Street or someone at the station," said Andy McCall, a morning news reporter for KTSA.

Street, who hosts a late night talk show poking fun at local media, denied involvement. He did, however, conduct an online interview with the mulch fire for a humorous bit on his show, S.A.X! Hysteria over the fire just struck him as funny, Street said.

"It is an 80-foot-tall pile of burning compost. That's really all you need for it to be funny," Street said.

Since it caught fire around Christmas Day, the blaze has confounded local and state officials, sparked protests from angry residents and attracted a flurry of local and national media attention. More than 100 families have relocated to hotels, schools have closed down and residents have complained that the smoke is causing sore throats, itchy eyes and problems breathing.

Macias, who lives downwind from the burning pile, said she's not one to belittle mulch madness. Her dogs are wheezing and she's emptied bottles of fabric freshener trying to kill the smoky stench settling into her curtains and couch. But that doesn't stop her from having a chuckle at the fire's expense.

"The situation is here, you might as well make fun of it," Macias said. "You can't stay mad at (the mulch) forever."

Hey, there's nothing like a nice big compost fire when you're stranded in Tulsa, OK.
