Has anyone ever cared about this before?
I've never seen this so blatantly done, but the stat-keeper in Orlando last night was either crooked, or just not paying attention AT ALL...
About halfway thru the 4th and Dirk needs 2 reb's and 3 assists for a triple double. The Mavs announcers were mentioning it every now and then. The first thing not recorded was a back tap by Dirk to Jason Terry. The announcers mention that it was Dirk's 9th rebound and then say "oh wow, they gave that to Terry." Then shortly after that Dirk dishes to Terry who hits a jumper, but Dirk isn't given an assist. And the most blatant "mistake" was with a few minutes left when Dirk had 9 rebounds (and 8 assists) and he got a rebound with NOBODY around him. They mention that Dirk got his double-double, but then they checked the stats and it was given to Terry!! After the game a Mavs employee told the stat-keeper about the mistake and it was changed, but that shouldn't have to happen.
In the end I don't really give a damn if Dirk gets a double double or triple double or whatever. If he gets it he gets it...but some cheese- stat-keeper shouldn't be slanting things one way or another when a player is getting close. I'm sure it happens all over the league, but this is the first time I've seen it done so blatantly...
Has anybody else noticed something like this before??
who cares about the stats its all about the W

As an aside, a rebound isn't a rebound until a player catches the ball; if the statkeepers in Dallas are counting backtaps as rebounds, they're in error. If Dirk backtaps and Terry catches it, it's Terry's rebound -- particularly because the backtap doesn't assure that the Mavericks will keep possession; it's the catch of the ball that does that, and therefore the catch should mark the rebound.
Doesn't the league review the game tapes and make stat adjustments anyway? I really don't know but always assumed this.
yeh that
I don't think so.
The stat keepers really aren't accurate.
I realized that last year when my friend got called up to the NBA for a few games because I watched his games very closely.
In one game, he got a monster block. The announcers went crazy about, talking about it and re-playing it over and over.
In the box score and play-by-play, it showed up credited to Mikki Moore, not him
Another game, he clearly shot 1-for-3. It showed up 1-for-2 and credited one of his misses to Chris Wilcox.
My point is that there's probably tons of mistakes every game that we don't notice because we don't watch closely.
In regards to tap out rebounds, I've seen it credited to the person who taps, the person was gets it after the tap, and credited as a team rebound. I think they try to guess how much control the person had who tapped it.

Actually if the player who taps it is considered to have had considerable enough control over it, to direct it, they will give the rebound to the tapper. It really is a grey area.
*Great minds think alike*
There are also liberties taken by the home staff.
I remember the talk about John Stockton getting so many favorable assists even though the pass didn't truly lead to the basket.
Thanks for the insight Kori. I figured that was the case. Last night it seemed to be happening late in the game with Dirk on the verge of a double/triple double, so I thought it was odd and incredibly weak. The 10th rebound for Dirk made it completely obvious what was going on...
thank you...Dirk tapped the ball out to Terry in a controlled manner...it wasn't a blind volleyball-like tap back away from the basket...
Of course it is...which is why I said I don't give a damn about Dirk getting a double or triple double. I just stated what I saw last night and was curious if others noticed, whether in that game, or any other game...
Thanks for contributing....![]()
I understand that...but giving Terry a rebound on what would've been Dirk's 10th (and eventually was after the Mavs staff corrected them) is totally different...
Do you run that forum?![]()

Not that I like it, but baseball has been doing that ever since I can remember: Was that an infield hit or was that little bobble an error? Depends on the official scorer's bias: and whether it being scored as a hit or error helps the home team's stats or hurts the visitors batting average
Yeah, I've always wondered about stat keeping. Like when they wouldn't give an assist to Avery after a pass to J.R. Reid because he upfaked. Saying that that was Reid's "created basket", not the "direct result of a pass".![]()
I have even seen players get an offensive rebound and an assist off of a controlled tap to an open teammate who catches it and shoots and scores.
Haha, I was watching the game last night on League Pass, no Dallas announcers and I could've sworn that I saw Dirk get his 8th assist so I was shocked later in the game when they announced that he had his 8th on what should've been the 9th assist. I thought my eyes were ing with me and I told my bf that I guess I was wrong....apparently not., thanks for posting this.
YES!!!! I completley agree.....I remember when Dirk dished off to Harris for that layup that he missed and that was the 9th missed.....
And then came the pass to Terry, who pump - faked, side stepped and shot. I yelled out that's number 10! Obviously forgetting about the missed one previously, and I was a lil drunk by then. The guy next to me said, "they didn't say anything....that must not be an assist?"
WTF I said. What are the rules to an assist? Can the player not take a step? Does he have to be in stride?
And usually the tips ARE counted as rebounds.
We kept Dirk in late last night......I'm starting to hate how that is happening a little too much when we are ahead by 15. I almost pee my pants when Dirk goes down clutching something or wincing. How many times has he got poked in the eye this season/ or had something hit his face? I dont know, but we should start keeping count.
not when dirk is the star of your fantasy team![]()
it's called a discussion and i guess you could include some spurs fans in there as well, since there appear to be some (including the owned of this site) lending contributions to the discussion
If tap outs didn't count as rebounds, Oberto would average two rebounds a game.
Mav Fan is warming up for this year's Three-Point Shootout.![]()
They ended up giving the rebound where he was alone along to Dirk, that is how he got 10.
