how far do you see the Spurs going this year?

If there is no trade whatsoever, no cutting, no free agent acquisition...if the Spurs as they are currently constructed play out the year, realistically how well can they do?

maybe 60/40 to get out of the first round, 50/50 if they play the Lakers in a 4/5 or 3/6

WC Finals and there we have to fight the Mavs again...and not sure whether we will have enough power to beat them in 7...it will depend on who we are playing in the 1st and the 2nd round...

    Second round and out.

With trade? Probably the same. This team needs an overhaul + heart transplant.

They might be able to squeak out of the first round, depending on the draw, but Dallas or Phoenix will beat them like a rented mule in the conf. semis, 5 games at most.

    I guess that's the pre-question:

How confident are you that the role players step up?

Given that, what do you think their chances are.

    "Second round and out."

First round vs the Lakers will be very tough, esp if the Spur finish 5th and open at Staples.

They need someone outside the Big 3 to step up. Otherwise, I think they lose in the 2nd round.

they are still 3rd best team in the league. Which means they have decent chance to go all the way.

if the rodeo roadtrip helps us to jell and we get back to spurs basketball, i think we have a legit chance to win it all. otherwise, i see us coming up short in the WCF again.

As far as Dirk Nowitski stands a decent chance to break his kneecaps.

They have a solid Big 3, some decent #7-8 guys but they are really weak in the #4-6 guys in the rotation. If they had a defensive minded rebounder with a good J at the 5, an athletic scoring swing with good rebounding instincts, and a better backup point then this thread wouldn't exist.

For the most part, the Spurs have been the favorite for the NBA Championship since 2003. They entered those Playoffs as an underdog to the three-time Champion Lakers and that was the last time they were ever considered the underdog. Even their limitations were often ignored or unnoticed by most, except (until this season it seems) Pop.

This is the first time in a while that I can remember where the consensus opinion among most - fans, media, etc. - seems to be that the Spurs are not the team to beat. Perhaps the players will hear enough of this that it will motivate them to play with a little more hunger, like they have something to prove.

Still, it will take great efforts all around to beat Dallas or Phoenix - hungry or not, trade or not.

But they don't have those things and this thread (realistically might I add) proposes that they will do nothing to get those things. With those things the Spurs are Champ favorites...without?

the fact that they are not favored certainly isn't fueling their fire and passion right now. except in the fourth quarter when they're down by 14 points.

If Horry, finley, barry stop playing with their heads up their ass and start making shots, they should be fine. Same thing with Bowen to some extent, he's missing some open ones

If the playoffs started today, first or second round exit. However, if the pathetic Miami Heat were able to get it together in the playoffs last year and win a championship, the Spurs can as well. The bench just needs to step up, which is asking a lot considering how unreliable it has been up to this point.

Any team with a HOF pivot and a bevy of shooters has a better than average chance to bust through the playoffs and win it all. Exhibit for the defense: the 94-95 Rockets that won a grand total of 47 regular season games, and last year's Heat squad.

    What about Eddie Jones?

Rumor has it, he will be waived. He could be picked up CHEAPLY. Would he fit here?

    Opinions will vary.
