No. 10 Texas A&M 69, No. 6 Kansas 66
Associated Press
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Acie Law scored 23 points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 21 seconds left, and No. 10 Texas A&M took over first place in the Big 12 with a 69-66 victory Saturday night over No. 6 Kansas.
The Jayhawks (19-4 overall, 6-2 Big 12) went up 62-52 with 6:33 to play on Sasha Kaun's baseline hook shot. But then Law led the Aggies on a 12-2 spree, capped by a three-point play by Antanas Kavaliauskas that made it 64-all with a minute to play.
Julian Wright worked inside for a bank shot with 45 seconds left that put Kansas back on top 66-64. After a time out by the Aggies (19-3, 7-1), Law drilled a guarded 3-pointer over Brandon Rush and A&M went up 67-66 with 20 seconds to go, their first lead since it was 26-24 in the first half.
After Mario Chalmers missed for Kansas, Law was fouled grabbing the rebound and hit two free throws that gave the Aggies a 69-66 lead with 5.2 seconds to go.
It was the first victory over Kansas in 12 tries for the Aggies, who became the first Big 12 South Division team to win in the Jayhawks' hallowed Allen Fieldhouse since the conference was formed in 1996.
Josh Carter had 11 points for Texas A&M and Joseph Jones and Dominique Kirk each had 10.
Kansas, which had been 31-0 at home against the South, got 18 points from Sherron Collins, 11 from Wright and 10 from Rush, who was only 3-for-13 from the field.
Collins, clearly the Jayhawks' best player all night long, committed a careless mistake that helped fuel A&M's surge. His bad pass was intercepted by the Aggies and Law went down for his three-point play that turned a 64-58 Jayhawk lead into 64-61.
With a 30-18 edge, the Jayhawks became the first team all year to outscore the Aggies in the paint. They also outrebounded the visitors 40-29, and appeared to be in position to seize first place in the league after Kaun's hook shot went in for a 62-52 lead.
But then Law capped a quick 6-0 spurt with a short jumper. After Russell Robinson's two free throws, Law went in from the baseline for a hook shot that drew a foul from Rush. He made the free throw that made it 64-61 and then Kavaliauskas completed the comeback with exactly a minute to play.
The Jayhawks shot only 42 percent against an Aggie defense that came in leading the country.
The rough, defense-dominated first half saw 10 lead changes and neither team able to lead by more than three until the Jayhawks closed out on a 5-0 run to take a 35-30 lead.
The Jayhawks' biggest lead was 57-46 with 9:49 to go.
One of a game. I watched it with some KU friends, it was fun watching them melt down in the last few minutes.
Even better though was Nebraska beating Missouri in Columbia earlier today![]()
Coming into Wednesday night's game (Mizzou @ KSU), the KC media kept reporting on and on about how hot Missouri was on their 2 game win streak and how they would be a force to be reckoned with the rest of the year...oh well, scratch that.
I think A&M wins by 10 vs. KU on a neutral court. The refs were very tough on Jones and AKav during the first 3/4 of the game. That limited their time and their ability to play physical, which explains the large and negative differences in rebounds, 2nd chance points and points in the paint. Any game A&M loses from here on out against the Big 12 will be a surprise. Just a huge win.
Edit: And a genius and gutsy move by Gillespie to stick with Jones after his 4th foul. He went for broke and it paid off. Along with the (un)intentional foul on the Sasha guy from Kansas who can't shoot FT's. Gillespie obviously outcoached Self tonight.

Yeah, to have 0 second chance points and give up that many offensive rebounds... I thought I was watching the Suns out there. (But A&M plays stifling D, so that's where the analogy ends.)
In fact, Acie to the Suns and they go 82-0... haha. The way they just couldn't get over the hump in the 2nd half (pretty much always cutting it to 5 and then letting KU go off), I was sitting there hoping they didn't get blown out. Can't forget what AK did out there hitting that FT to tie it... more clutch than Diaw was tonight at the line...
The Danny Manning sighting was just as classic as the game.
What are the odds of A&M winning given the rebounding stats? Basically zero. Law was the variance, though.
Exactly, I thought there was no chance with the way things were going. Man, I'm glad I extended the DVR an extra 30 mins so I can watch the end of that one again. All those people who have been calling the Ags "pretenders" of the Top 10 just got the game they needed to change their minds. Acie will go down as one of the basketball gods in A&M's (short) history.
"Every time we made a run, they made a run right back," Rush said. "I'm a little frustrated. We should have won that game. We let this one slip away."
Well, maybe if you didn't go 3-of-13 from the field Brandon. I hate his y, asshole face and he'll be a bigger NBA bust than Sam Bowie, PJ Tucker, and Ed O'Bannon rolled into one.
I really didn't think Law was NBA worthy until tonight. He's starting to remind me of Jameer Nelson. I wouldn't be surprised to see this game spark him on a huge run the rest of the year, all the way to Atlanta.
Should be a great game on Monday night - Durant v. Acie. After that game tonight, SuperBowl tomorrow and then Texas on Monday, I'm gonna have to sleep for a week.
If only Acie had better ballhandling skills (I think he dribbles it too high and this gets him into trouble), he'd be a lock for a 1st round PG. At this rate, he'll be a late-1st rounder as a combo guard of some kind, I think.
Talk about freezing over...
* Students were camping out since last Sunday for this game.
* KU greats highlighted - Danny Manning (scouting the game), Herm Edwards taking it in, etc.
* 31 straight wins over the B12 south by KU at Phog
* 11-0 all-time KU record vs. A&M
* down 10 inside of four minutes left
* smoked on the offensive glass like we were
Crazy, crazy win.
I wish there was some way of getting him on the Spurs.
I wonder if he and Antanas can swap names for the draft, then the Spurs would be all over it![]()
Haha - we'll trade you Banks if you get him.
Definitely his PG weakness. I said before on another thread that if he hadn't have forgotten how to dribble for the first part of the game against UCLA then A&M would have won that game.
But that's obviously forgotten now. There's not that much difference between a #2 seed (which I think A&m's a lock for after tonight) and a #1 seed anyway. But, A&m's still got a great shot at a #1.

I was there at UCLA. I don't hold the start of that game against him. The big thing is that UCLA is athletic as . They were quick and strong. Yeah, I know, everyone in college ball is, but they were playing the start of that game on a whole other level (think when Phoenix gets on a big run).
That, coupled with about 18,000 noisy UCLA fans and John Wooden on the fifth row, and I don't really hold it against Acie.
The big thing they got out of that game is that they compete with anyone in the country wherever they are playing, and it's showed in their play since.
I'd love for the selection committee to roll the brackets in such a manner that we would get the chance to meet the Bruins in the Final Four on a neutral court (or , I won't complain if they put us both in the SA Regional).
yeah UCLA was fired up and I think Acie was a little nervous for the first few minutes. Better to have 1st half jitters and 2nd half ice, though. Surely the selection commitee will see that game as the 95% UCLA home game that it was. A&M vs. UCLA on a neutral court is even money right now, no doubt about it. That means the Aggies can match up against anybody, which means #2 seed at this point in time. As the non-Vital announcer said - A&M can take a punch and step right back up as good as anyone in the country. That was proven in spades tonight.
Manning is a coach for the sqawks (he has the le of team manager or something like that).
Aggies grab Big 12 lead with historic win in Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Call it prime time or nighttime, it didn't matter to Acie Law IV. He was going to get some camera time.
Law sank the game-winning 3-pointer with 24 seconds left, and 10th-ranked Texas A&M completed a historic comeback for a 69-66 victory over the sixth-ranked Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
"We just wouldn't quit," A&M coach Billy Gillispie said. "No matter what it looked like or how we were guarding, we just hung in there. We made play after play after play down the stretch, and I guess that's the way you go about winning on the road, here, because it's very, very difficult to do and doesn't happen very often."
The victory put A&M (19-3, 7-1 Big 12) in sole possession of first place atop the Big 12 standings. It also was the Aggies' first win over Kansas in 12 games, and it was the first time a Big 12 South team has won in Lawrence since the conference was formed. South teams had been 0-31 at Allen Fieldhouse before Saturday's game.
Law, who scored a game-high 23 points, showed his exuberance when Mario Chalmers' last-ditch 3-point effort missed everything. He sprinted to the opposite end of the court, lifted up his jersey to show the A&M name to the ESPN cameraman and pointed at the Jayhawk fans, who stood and booed.

Texas A&M's Acie Law IV shoots the game-winning 3-pointer over Kansas' Brandon Rush in the last minute of play Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse. Law had 23 points to lead A&M's comeback.
While Law played hero during the game, he wasted no time during the postgame press conference apologizing for his and A&M's behavior following the victory.
"The way we acted after the ballgame I think was really disrespectful" Law said. "We really let the emotions of the victory take the best of us. I want to apologize for the way we acted, the way we responded to the victory. Kansas is a great team, and we have a lot more class than we showed tonight."
The Aggies' emotions built over a hard-fought second half against the Jayhawks and their sellout crowd of 16,300.
Law followed up his 3-pointer, which put A&M up for the first time since they led 24-22, with two free throws at the 5.2-second mark for the game's final points. The free throws followed a missed runner by Kansas' Mario Chalmers, which Marlon Pompey rebounded with 6 seconds left.
On the final possession, Sherron Collins, who paced KU with 18 points, dribbled the ball upcourt quickly before handing it back to Chalmers for the final attempt.
Law's game-winning 3 was the only trey he hit in four attempts.
"[Brandon] Rush just laid off me a little bit," Law said of the game-winning play. "We were down two, and I felt like he thought I was going to drive it, so I just took it as a great opportunity to go for the win. The kind of team we are ... we're on the road, back against the wall. Why not go for it all and lay it on the line?"
A&M trailed 57-46 midway through the second half but got 3-pointers from Joseph Jones and Josh Carter and a three-point play by Law to help creep back to within 64-61.

Kansas players leave the court after losing to Texas A&M on Saturday at Allen Fieldhouse.
On KU's next possession, A&M pressed, and after the Jayhawks got the ball upcourt, Pompey purposely fouled Sasha Kaun, a 53-percent shooter from the foul line. Kaun missed the first of a one-and-one opportunity, and the Aggies rebounded with a chance to tie the score.
Jones missed a 3-pointer, but Antanas Kavaliauskas grabbed the rebound and put it back for a basket while being fouled by Julian Wright.
Kavaliauskas hit the free throw to tie it at 64 with 1 minute left.
Law scored the final five points to lift A&M past Kansas, both on the court and in the Big 12 standings.
"This is special," Law said. "It's one of the biggest victories. We'll see how we handle it on Monday, but this one feels really, really good."
A&M hosts Texas at 8 p.m. at Reed Arena in another nationally televised game.
Texas could've remained in a tie for first place but fell to Kansas State in Austin on Saturday.
Kansas, Kansas State and Texas are 6-2 in Big 12 play, one game behind A&M halfway through the conference schedule.
Acie will be a very very good NBA guard. Pop would love to have him, his defense is better than 90% of the NBA guards right now. His confidence level is off the charts, and he is a great leader that every team member loves to play with.....you add all that up and he would be the perfect Spur.
AHF, the Aggies' season, and me having season tickets actually make me feel a whole lot better about the Spurs' downfall. I find me self at peace, even when the Spurs lose, because I know there is something special going on here in College Station.
Gillespie is being Deified here in this town, and it is fun to watch. I can see basketball actually competing with football on an even keel, this was not even though possible 3 yrs ago.
If A&M wins the conference, garners a 2 seed in NCAAs, and makes it to Final 4 in Atlanta *gulp*, Gillespie will be the most popular coach at A&M since Bear Bryant, and deservedly so.
Good stuff man.
BTW, if they do get 2 seed, I am willing to bet that it would be first time in history that a team went from 12 seed to 2 seed in one year.
