They deserve it because of several reasons, the foremost of all being:

    Tim Duncan.

    Also:

    Manu, Bruce and Tony.

    Finally:

Until this team ACTUALLY gets a 5-8 seed and ACTUALLY goes out in the first round, they have earned our trust and respect via 3 championships and several deep playoff runs. Nobody and no team in any walk of life is perfect (ask the Celtics), and while fans reserve any right whatsoever to either support or diss their team, or both, I am just making the point that we should take a deep breath, have faith that the team is well aware of their shortcomings and that they are doing everything humanly possible to correct them. Maybe they simply are not as good as Dallas or Phoenix, for example, right now, but this franchise has treated us to glory and good times. They've risen from small market anonymity to the world stage and have shone brightly.

In true summary, championship or not, trust that they are doing what they believe is best to become champions again. Perhaps this is not their year, but perhaps a surprise is in store.

And if they don't win the championship this year? Well, at least they are not Dallas or Phoenix, who have exactly zero championships to date. And should one of those franchises win one, well, we've got freaking 3 to embrace.

Success is fleeting, and its oh so hard to reach the cusp of greatness in one's profession, and the Spurs have done it three times. You've also gotta have luck and an improbable stroke of fate. I bet countless Spurs fans were stunned and sickened over a decade ago when David Robinson took a wrong step and landed on the IR for an entire season. Little would they know that that disaster would instantly transform into a bud of hope and steely resilience which would actually lead this franchise toward a path of greatness, a greatness which would mark this team a decade later as the winningest professional sports franchise in America.

No, I'm not writing them off and burying them, I'm just putting this season into its proper perspective.

Yes, I'm going to continue to get flustered at Barry or Finley's defensive lapses, at Bruce's missed open shots and I will grit my teeth at Tim getting his shot stuffed. I will also temporarily put a take like this on the backburner and opt to curse this team for blowing a late lead at home against an Eastern Conference lottery team. I will get pissed off. But moment's like that are also fleeting. This franchise has already proven itself to me, and its hard to hate on champions.

Now, I'm not giving them license to tank from here on out and never win another championship again, but I'm willing to give these champions like Tim, Manu, Tony and Bruce some space to trip over their own two feet from time to time.

Don't cross them out just yet!

I also know I'm not exactly saying something unique here. I'm sure virtually all of you fellow Spurs fan can relate to at least some of what I'm saying. I'm also sure some smack will be thrown in this thread. But I said what I wanted to say, and this is a Spurs fan forum. The best damn Spurs fan forum in existence. So what I said is what it is. Have some.

I agree and am glad for you that you have been blessed with a team that has had a lot of success and, because of that, brought joy to all of it's fans.

Remember, however, that the thirty championship-less years the Spurs endured do not take away from the amazing success they had since, and you should not hold that against the Mavs either. I, for one, would find a Dallas championship all the sweeter after experiencing bitter loss.

If the team hits their usual stride and intensity in March, I think we'll finish #3 and go to the WCFs. From there? Who knows...

No, I'm from the U.S., born in Houston, transplanted to San Antonio.

I have residency in Brazil, own a home and business there and spend a little over half the year down here, the rest up there in San Antonio and Miami. I call San Antonio home.

Objective and intelligent fans of other teams fear the Spurs. Every other kind of fan is just a blind homer.

Agreed. I've said it before, they may be struggling, but as long as they've got Tim Duncan, you can NOT put them out of the race.

The last two games, against a weak opponent and good but flat-night opponent (Spurs lost 3rd and esp 4th qtrs), seem to show the Spurs are starting over from scratch to re-learn how to play Spurs top-notch basketball.

Maybe we should chip in and donate a 3-month supply of FocusFactor?
