CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Prosecutors have filed DUI and other charges against Illinois basketball player Jamar Smith in an accident that left one of his teammates seriously injured.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz charged Smith with felony aggravated DUI and failure to report an accident on Tuesday. Smith was cited earlier for improper lane usage.

The 19-year-old was driving in snowy conditions on Feb. 12 when his 1996 Lexus struck a tree. His passenger, freshman center Brian Carlwell, ended up with a severe concussion.

The University of Illinois has already announced that Smith will sit out the rest of the season. Carlwell was well enough to be courtside for Sunday's Illinois-Northwestern game at Assembly Hall, and coach Bruce Weber said he could play again in the post-season.
