It’s another week on the road, and another challenge, for Oregon State as it travels to the Domino’s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic at Texas A&M. The 15th-ranked Beavers (11-2 overall) will meet host Texas A&M (12-1) on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PST and Monday at 2:30 p.m. PST; New Mexico (6-8) on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. PST and St. Louis (0-6) on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. PST.

The trip makes it four straight weekends that OSU has traveled, and five weekends out of the last six as the Beavers begin their season with 17 straight games away from home.

“We’ve managed to have some success early despite being on the road so much,” OSU head coach Pat Casey said. “But we also know that we’ve got a lot of work to do if we’re going to be compe ive in the Pac-10. We’re still looking for a consistently high level of performance, and that’s going to be crucial this weekend because these are three very good teams we’re playing.

“We have a chance to really finish this first part of the season strong if we come out and play the way that we’re capable of playing, but we’re going to have to step up our intensity and execution.”

Oregon State will finally open its home schedule when it hosts Evansville in a series March 8-10 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. That series begins a six-game homestand for the Beavers.

The Beavers are ranked 15th nationally in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll; that poll was taken in the preseason and will next be updated in early march. OSU maintained its position from last week in the other three polls, being ranked ninth by Baseball America magazine and Collegiate Baseball newspaper and seventh by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

The Beavers continue to be led at the plate by junior catcher Mitch Canham (.462 batting average, 1 home run, 14 runs batted in), along with junior outfielder Braden Wells (.393, 0, 1), freshman infielder Joey Wong (.390, 0, 4), and junior first baseman Jordan Lennerton (.349, 0, 12).

Texas A&M beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 8-7 at home on Tuedsay after it swept Jacksonville State at home by scores of 15-5, 6-4 and 12-0 last weekend. Leading hitters for the Aggies have been junior outfielder Blake Stouffer (.404, 2, 17), senior catcher Craig Stinson (.400, 2, 12), junior first baseman Darby Brown (.353, 0, 8), junior outfielder Ben Feltner (.340, 0, 4) and junior infielder Brandon Hicks (.333, 0, 8).

New Mexico was beaten by Texas Tech 10-8 at home on Tuesday; the Lobos had taken two of three from Texas State at home last weekend, winning 10-0 and 13-7 before losing the finale 11-4. Pacing the UNM attack have been junior second baseman Jordan Pacheco (.434, 2, 10), senior first baseman Daniel Stovall (.356, 3, 18) and senior outfielder Matt Foote (.341, 1, 7).

St. Louis was swept at Central Arkansas last weekend, losing 6-4, 13-12 and 5-4. Leading the Billikens have been sop re infielder Tom Pinnell (.444, 0, 2), senior infielder/catcher Casey Moore (.389, 2, 4) and freshman outfielder J.D. Dunn (.333, 0, 3).

National champs fall to Texas A&M

    By RICHARD CROOME
    Eagle Staff Writer

The Texas A&M baseball team completed a rare double Friday at Olsen Field with a 5-2 victory over Oregon State in the opening day of the Domino's Pizza Aggie Classic.

With the victory, A&M has now beaten the then-No. 1 team (Rice) and the defending national champions (Oregon State) in less than a month.

"From an RPI standpoint, it's big for our team when we start looking toward the end of the season," A&M coach Rob Childress said.

David Newmann got the victory, his second against no losses, while Kyle Nicholson earned his first save with 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball.

Nicholson entered the game with the Aggies leading 3-2 but with Oregon State runners on first and third with one out in the top of the sixth. The A&M right-hander induced a double play, with Spencer Jackson making a nice scoop at first to get Mike Lissman out and end the threat.

"I threw a sinker in there," Nicholson said. "It was kind of a long at-bat, and I threw nothing but sinkers to try and get the double play and it worked out."

The Aggies picked up two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning with their speed.

Parker Dalton singled to center, and Brandon Hicks followed with a single to left. They both moved up with stolen bases when Feltner missed on a bunt attempt. A wild pitch by Blake Keitzman scored Dalton. Blake Stouffer then walked, and when Keitzman threw over to first on a pickoff play, Hicks stole home for the game's final run.

A&M jumped ahead early with two runs in the first and one in the second.

Craig Stinson singled in Hicks to open the scoring, and with one out, a Josey Parker fielder's choice that shortstop Darwin Barney bobbled for an error scored Stouffer, who had singled.

Stinson hit a two-out single to score Hicks in the second off starter Joe Peterson (2-1).

Oregon State scored in the third on a walk to Mitch Canham, an error by Newmann on an sacrifice bunt attempt and a fielder's choice RBI by Chris Hopkins.

In the fifth, Dale Solomon doubled, and Canham hit a grounder back up the middle past a diving Dalton for an RBI single.

Saint Louis won its first game of the season 5-2 over New Mexico (6-9) in the first game of the Aggie Classic.

On Saturday, OSU plays New Mexico at 12:30 p.m., and A&M faces Saint Louis at 6:30 p.m.

Apparently you guys forgot they played a second time...

College Station, Texas -- The No. 8 (released Monday) Oregon State baseball team used a 12-hit attack to defeat the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies 6-5 in the final game of the four-day Domino’s Pizza Aggies Baseball Classic at Olsen Field. The game was shortened to eight innings in a pre-arranged agreement with both teams due to the Beavers’ travel schedule. The win by OSU (14-3) snapped the Aggies’ (15-2) 14-game winning streak.

Oregon State used a four-run third inning to build a 5-0 lead. First baseman Jason Ogata delivered the big strike in the inning with his first career home run as a Beaver, a two-run shot over the left-field fence. Leftfielder Mike Lissman and designated hitter Dale Solomon also provided RBI in the frame.

The Beavers scored what proved to be the winning run in the seventh when rightfielder Braden Wells hit an RBI single that brought home Lissman. Lissman, who was aboard on a leadoff double, was 3-for-4 for the day and opened the scoring for the Beavers with a solo home run to left field in the first inning. Lissman went 5-for-8 with four-RBI over the last two games of the tournament, including three doubles and a home run.

Five Beaver pitchers combined for the victory. Anton Maxwell moved his record to 2-0 for the season after throwing three scoreless innings to begin the game, allowing five hits. Eddie Kunz earned his second save.

Texas A&M rallied for four runs in the eighth coming on a two-out grand slam by shortstop Brandon Hicks. Kunz came into the game to face the following batter, getting a ground out to end the game.

Texas A&M was declared the tournament champion by virtue of a tie-breaker after both teams won three of four games, including splitting two head-to-head match-ups. Texas A&M won Friday’s contest 5-2.

The Beavers long-awaited home opener is Thursday when they entertain the Evansville Purple Aces at the new-look Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Thursday’s and Friday’s games begin at 4 p.m. with Saturday’s series finale at 1 p.m. Tickets are available at osubeavers.com, the Gill Coliseum Ticket Office or by calling 1-800-Go-BEAVS. The audio and live video will able be available through Beaver Nation Online via osubeavers.com. You can also hear the game on KEJO (1240 AM) in the mid-Willamette Valley and KUIK (1360 AM) in Hillsboro.

Apparently, you're proud of your athletic department's lack of oversight in scheduling a Monday game in a time crunch.
