Ice Man Gervin might be involved with RGV D-League team

HIDALGO — The Rio Grande Valley NBA Development League franchise is hoping to bring “Ice” to deep South Texas.

Not ice like the hockey team plays on, but a pro basketball legend who is an NBA Hall of Famer and was selected as one of the league’s top 50 players of all-time.

Former San Antonio Spurs great George “Ice Man” Gervin is in negotiations for a possible front office position with the RGV’s D-League franchise, RGV D-League part owner and president Ryan Murphy said.

Should Gervin, who averaged 26.2 points per game and won four scoring les while mostly playing for San Antonio in the 1980s, become a part of the RGV D-League organization, it could lead to the Spurs being one of the team’s two affiliates. It’s believed either the Spurs or the Rockets will be the RGV team’s NBA affiliate.

Gervin currently is a community relations representative for the Spurs and works with a magnet school program. If he signs on with the RGV franchise, Gervin is expected to keep his position with the Spurs.

In addition to the possible addition of Gervin, the RGV D-League franchise has submitted two coaching candidates for an FBI background investigation. Each has college and professional coaching experience, and Murphy expects them to interview with the franchise’s other owners within the next 10 days.

Also, the team announced the hiring of former University of Texas-Pan American player John Braxton as the corporate sales director.

Finally, fans will be able to vote on the team’s name online Monday through nba.com. Murphy said the organization submitted 20 potential names to the NBA legal department, which will cut the list to five for the online vote. Three of the five names were approved Friday. Murphy refused to reveal the names for legal reasons. To vote, go to http://www.nba.com/dleague/riograndevalley.

Murphy, Braxton and other representatives of the franchise have a booth set up at the ongoing BorderFest at Dodge Arena, where fans can make deposits for season tickets.

Well, it would suck if the Toros aren't the Spurs' affiliate anymore. It could go either way.

The Rio Grand Valley team would sell out every game, due to the fact there is absolutely jack to do down there.

You take that back -- it's BorderFest time down there. Charo is playing tonight! Makes sense because this year BorderFest is a tribute to Ireland.

Since I'm down there for work a lot now, I would love this.

I would even go see some games whenever a Spur were on the team.

    Sounds fun!
