Um, those are John Hollinger's ESPN rankings, not NBA.com's ranking.

It's funny that the person who submitted the comment for the Suns said that Phoenix has stopped Tim Duncan when Tim has averaged 23 and 16 versus Phoenix this year.

Power rankings, even of those that attempt to be quan atively analytical like Hollinger's, are a gigantic waste of time.

They aren't for the guys that have to come up with crap to write about everyday for their job.

It's why every year there's a hot team or teams (Mavs & Suns this year) that everyone writes about. After awhile everything has been written about them so a few writers that are in need of something different to write about then pick a team that "people are overlooking" (Spurs this year) to write about...and on it goes. It happens every year it's amazing people seriously latch on to the opinions of some of these writers when most of it is just them making a living by writing stuff they think people want to read. Analysts on tv do the same thing and if you've noticed there's almost always differing opinions so they have something to debate.

Feel the same way, the mindset of media mouthpieces and writers.

Here is a post from last year, don't let the dust get in your nose.........

I dunno for sure but I suspect that there's a "formula" that the casters take, you know, 1 reasonable guy, 1 informative guy and then the loose cannon. That kinda dynamic also seems to run in other reporting venues.

I think this playoffs will be all about Manu redeeming himself for last year's stupid foul.

I hear ya....but there is something to these "daily" ranking updates. The Spurs are playing the best...and while the game was very entertaining last night...I was relieved to see that Dallas and Phoenix are miles away from being a consistent defensive threat like The Spurs...

A gigantic waste of time compared to what? Compared with earning money? Sure. Meeting people, finding love, setting goals and achieving them, absolutely.

But in the context of following a basketball season, why would power rankings be a waste of time? The playoffs are more than a month a way, so the old saw about "The playoffs are what matters" is especially pointless now. This is the season, we're in the middle of it, and trying to evaluate and compare performances is relevant. Power rankings during the offseason? No thanks. Power rankings during the preseason? Just as irrelevant as offseason power rankings. Power rankings during the playoffs? Needless because there is no varying schedule and none of the playoff teams are going to play common opponents. But in the middle of the season, power rankings are fine.

Nobody stops TD come playoff time. Didn't everyone learn that lesson once and for all last year.

Because fans convince themselves that being #1 in whichever power rankings means that their team is going to win the championship.

With a healthy Shaquille the Heat are in the top 3...

The Lakers are over rated but the assessment is spot on...( Kobe Bryant is talented, but not good enough to support the entire weight of the Lakers. The Lakers played their best ball early and appear to be running out of gas.)

Fans were never delusional about their team's championship hopes until those stupid power rankings came along.
