The Dallas Mavericks with the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft? If Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy had his way, that could happen.
Van Gundy wants to open up the NBA draft lottery to all 30 NBA teams in an effort to keep teams from losing intentionally to hopefully secure the No. 1 pick.
"I think every team should have an equal chance at winning the lottery, from the best team all the way down," Van Gundy told The Houston Chronicle. "I don't want to accuse anyone of anything. I would say to take away any possible conflict of interest, everyone should have an equal chance at the top pick all the way down. That way there would be absolutely no question by anybody about anything.
"If it's better for the game, they should do it. I never quite understood why losing is rewarded, other than [for] parity."
According to The Chronicle, Van Gundy presented his proposal to the NBA, but wasn't taken seriously.

What a ing idiot, I guess he really doesnt want Yao
they laughed at that idiot. what a moronic suggestion.
Might not be technically possible, but how about have the first round picks given to the teams that didn't make the playoffs based on a totally equal lottery system. Worse teams won't have a better chance than better teams who just barely missed the playoffs. The second round picks would go to the playoff teams based on how far they went in the playoffs. (example, last year Heat would've gotten #1, Mavs #2 and so on.)
Is this a stupid idea?
Yeah, but there will probably be something wrong or impossible with it.
Kori?
The worst teams deserve a greater chance to get better than the best teams. The lottery is just fine - except that they never actually show the drawing of the ping-pong balls
I know that Van Gundys system would never see the light of day because every year, the best teams would just get better and the bottom dwellers would stay there unless they happen to get a Ginobili type steal in the draft.
Getting a better chance just because you suck isn't really fair. To me, it's like if I bought a ticket to a raffle and the poor people had a better chance at winning that big screen just because they can't manage their money.
I actually am looking for constructive criticism on it. I would assume that the top tier teams(Spurs/Suns/Mavs) would benefit from being rewarded based on playoff record.![]()
How would they would benefit by not getting a first round pick?
I was thinking the first round would only consist of 1 pick per non playoff team.
So 30 teams minus 16 playoff teams would equal 14 first round picks, so the 2nd round would basically start at pick #15.
I'm just throwing ideas out there. I'm still waiting for an expert to pick apart my idea.
Teams don't lose ONLY because of mismanagement. Sometimes they lose because of injury. Sometimes they lose because the last time they had a high draft pick, the draft was week. Sometimes they do all their homework and the solid player they drafted turned out to be a headcase.
But it's unfair to the fans of the Celtics, the Warriors, the Bobcats, the Hawks etc. if they have no realistic chance to get out of the cellar.
The first 14 picks would go to the bottom dwellers. I'm just saying that the rest of the draft should reward the teams that do well without having to resort to the lottery year in and year out.
One problem, a team who didn't make the playoffs could get the #1 pick and a team with the same record who did make the playoffs but got swept could end up with the last pick in the 2nd round.
Nevermind.![]()
posting here to get the Larry Hughes >>>> Kobe thread pushed down so that it's ignored completely.
I like the idea...the salary cap is very similar to this....every team has the same amount of $ to spend on their team. Free Agents can go where they please and expect the same amount of $. Still, if it's to provide parity then why does it seem that most bottom dweller teams are still riding the pine come playoff time, even though they have had good draft picks. See Clippers, Celtics, Golden State....
