    1. Dallas - 60-11
    2. Phoenix - 53-17 - Pacific Division Clinched
    3. San Antonio - 51- 20
    4. Utah 47-24 - NW Division Clinched
    5. Houston - 46-26

I know they changed seeding rules since last year...Is Utah guaranteed one of the top 4 seeds for having clinched the NW Division? What if Houston ends up with a better record than Utah, could Utah still be seeded 5th having won the NW Division? Doesn't it make sense to just have the best 4 teams seeded based on record, rather than ending up with a top 4 seed NOT having homecourt advantage like last year? NBA needs to do away with divisions.

Utah is guaranteed a top 4 seed if they have clinched. The top 4 seeds are the 3 division winners and the other team with the best record (in order of record).

Dallas, Phoenix, and Utah have all clinched top 4 seeds. Dallas could theoretically lose the division (basically, if they lost out and the Spurs won out) but can't fall to any worse than #3 at this point.

The Mavs have a magic number of 3 to win the Southwest outright (any combination of 3 Mavs wins or 3 Spurs losses) -- that does away with any tiebreaker scenario.

I think the Mavs' magic number to seal up the West is 6 (any combination of 6 Mavs wins or 6 Suns losses).

The Spurs have a magic number of 6 (I think) to clinch a top 4 seed (any combination of 6 Spurs wins or 6 Rockets losses will do that trick).

The Spurs also have a magic number of 8 to clinch no worse than the #3 seed (any combination of 8 Spurs wins or 8 Jazz losses).

If Houston ends up 5th Seed with a better record than 4th Seed Utah, Utah will still be 4th seed but Houston will have homecourt advantage in that round.

I do believe that that is the question he wanted answered.

That doesn't make sense. I thought all Division Winners had home court advantage in the first round regardless of record. If the previous statement were true that Houston would have HCA as a 5th seed, why not just say they are the 4th seed ?

Yes, Houston will have HCA as the #5 seed IF they have the better record.

Because then a division winner would be seeded lower then fourth, and by rule, they can't be.

    Seeding effects the brackets (1, 4, 5, 8 and 2, 3, 6, 7), W-L determains homecourt in a series.

More importantly, I believe the Spurs will have the tiebreaker over Phoenix if they win next Thursday.
