Riley, Popovich Named Coaches of the Month...

NEW YORK, April 2, 2007 – The Miami Heat’s Pat Riley and the San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich today were named the NBA Eastern and Western Conference Coaches of the Month, respectively, for March.

Riley guided the Heat to an 11-4 (.733) record last month without leading scorer Dwyane Wade, and without Jason Kapono for 13 of the 15 games. The Heat limited its opponents to 9.4 fewer points per game than it had allowed in games through February (57 games). Miami finished the month with the best record and winning percentage in the Southeast Division, and tied the Cleveland Cavaliers for the most wins in the Eastern Conference.

Popovich led the Spurs to a 13-2 record last month with an average margin of victory of 15.2 points. The bench was a big part of the Spurs solid month. The reserves averaged 44.7 points, 16.7 rebounds, and 11.0 assists, while shooting 45.5 percent from the field and 85.1 percent from the free throw line. San Antonio was also the first team to ever win consecutive road games by 37 or more points while playing on back-to-back nights. Other nominees for the Coach of the Month were Boston’s Doc Rivers, Chicago’s Scott Skiles, Cleveland’s Mike Brown, Dallas’ Avery Johnson, Detroit’s Flip Saunders and Houston’s Jeff Van Gundy.

Shouldn't Pop be named Eastern Conference coach of the month...after all he did help out several Eastern teams with wins this month they wouldn't have gotten otherwise: Bucks, Celtics, Pacers............
