Any player who runs into the stands to attack an unruly fan gets a 41 game unpaid suspension. Make this an "on the books" rule. No more arguing. Let players know that this kind of behavior will be dealt with consistently and with supreme harshness. A rule against going into the stands needs to be firmly implanted in the rules of the game. Doesn't matter if the fan is in the first or 115th row. And any fan seen throwing things on the court or who gets on the court for hostile reasons is immediately removed from the game, and their season tickets are removed as well. A concrete rule like this needs to be issued to keep this kind of nonsense from happening again. This situation can be compared to the cold war between the U.S. and Russia. The NBA must make fighting a war infinitely more costly than not fighting.

But the problem is the same that will arise with this incident. How do you deal with a team that will invariably suffer due to the loss of a player or three when it comes to draft picks?

Maybe give them the final picks of the rounds regardless of lottery or playoff placement.

41 seems ok. The fans can loose their tickets, be fined, and/or face jailtime just like they would if they through their beer at a cop.
