Nedovyesov knocked off Makowski for the second time this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The 12th-ranked Oklahoma State men’s tennis squad defeated rival and 36th-ranked Texas A&M, 4-1, Friday in Kansas City at the Plaza Tennis Center to advance to the semifinals of the 2007 Big 12 Championship. The Cowboys (17-3), who have now beaten the Aggies five-straight times, have now advanced to the semifinals for the fifth-straight season, the only other school to achieve that feat is Baylor.

Earlier this season, OSU edged out the Aggies, 4-3, in one of the closet matches of the year for head coach James Wadley’s squad. One of the keys to the Aggies’ near upset was the early advantage they gained by nabbing the doubles point. The Cowboys got off to a good start Friday by winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles to take the crucial point.

As has been the case for most of the season, OSU’s outstanding freshman, Oleksandr Nedovyesov, got the Cowboys going early with a dominating win at No. 1 singles. Nedovyesov, ranked No. 25, defeated No. 68 Jerry Makowski, 6-1, 6-1, for the second time this season. He has now notched 12 wins this season over ranked foes.

The Cowboys’ lead was pushed to 3-0 with another strong outing by a Cowboy freshman in his first Big 12 Championship as Dmytro Petrov defeated Brad Williams, 6-2, 6-4. The two freshmen are tied for the team lead in wins this spring with 16.

After an O-State loss at No. 6 singles, the match was clinched by All-American Daniel Byrnes at No. 3 singles. The senior needed three sets but he avenged his earlier loss to Luka Ocvirk, 7-6 (6), 2-6, 6-2.

“It was huge for us to have Daniel (Byrnes) win a three-set match to clinch the win,” head coach James Wadley said. “It has been a while since he has done that. It was good to see him rise up.”

OSU moves on to face the winner ot the Texas/Texas Tech match Saturday at 9 a.m.
