I got to drive through Houston today and with the Rocket signing with the Yankees and the Rockets getting bounced out of the playoffs by Boozer and company, I knew it would be an interesting day on Houston sports talk radio.
The hosts generally were supportive of Van Gundy and felt he needs a better power forward and point guard to contend. They concede Battier is a nice role player but when he is the third best player in the starting rotation, you don't have a team that will compete for the championship.
What got my attention is the Rocket fans are ready to ship out Yao. The scenario I heard the most was shipping out Yao and getting Kevin Garnett in return. Also, the fans are ready to throw Van Gundy under the bus.
The Rockets are in a tougher spot than the Spurs are when you look at it. They need a starting point guard, we need a back up point guard. They need a better power forward than Chuck Hayes or Juwan Howard, we need an eventual replacement for Bruce Bowen. They need improvement on the bench, we seem to always be able to rent some vet past his prime to come in an hustle for a ring.

The Houston sports scene sucks. They're in love with the Astros for some odd reason and act like they hate the ans. They know nothing about other teams or sports in general. And if they're too dumb to realize that Yao played his ass off in Game 7, then they deserve all the misery they've received.
It's no wonder the 4th largest city in America can't find a fan-base decent enough to fill their arenas/stadiums and let the Oilers bolt for Nashville. Not only that, but no C-USA D-1 school that used to have Phi Slamma Jamma and a Heisman winner (ok, he sucked, but still) should be losing money on its sports teams... then again, Suns fans can be fairweather too, but I've lived through the summer of 1993, so I know what they can do.

Between 1987 and 1992, the Rockets had winning records, but they never got past the 2nd round of the playoffs. With new coach Rudy Tomjanovich leading the way, the Rockets won 55 games in 1992-93, but the Seattle SuperSonics knocked them off in the Conference Semifinals.
On July 30, 1993, Leslie Alexander purchased the Rockets. In Tomjanovich's second full year as head coach, the Rockets began the 1993-94 season with an NBA record start of 15-0. With Hakeem Olajuwon as their center, the Rockets defeated the New York Knicks in seven games to win the championship. After being down three games to two in the 1994 NBA Finals, the Rockets won the last two games on their home court, thanks to a clutch play by Olajuwon. In the waning seconds of the fourth quarter of game 6 the Rockets clung to a 2 point lead when hot shooting guard John Starks, who had scored 27 points up until then, pulled up for a game winning shot. Olajuwon had slipped coming around a screen but recovered to block the shot and preserve the lead as time expired. This is often considered one of the greatest clutch defensive plays in NBA History.
The Rockets struggled in the first half of the 1994-95 season. In a midseason trade with Portland, the Rockets obtained star guard Clyde Drexler, who had played alongside Olajuwon at the University of Houston, in exchange for Otis Thorpe. Houston entered the playoffs as the sixth seed in the Western Conference and were underdogs against the 60-22 Utah Jazz in the first round, the 59-23 Phoenix Suns in the second round (who led the Rockets 3-1 before losing three straight), and the 62-20 San Antonio Spurs in the conference finals. In the fifth game of the San Antonio series, Olajuwon gave a career performance. After a pregame MVP award ceremony honoring David Robinson, Olajuwon dominated the game, outscoring Robinson 42-22 in a Rockets win. Houston won all three series to reach the Finals against the Orlando Magic, whose headline players were Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway. Houston swept the series in four straight games. The Rockets became the first team in NBA history to win the championship as a sixth seed. They also became only the second team in NBA history to overcome a 3-1 series deficit without homecourt advantage. In addition, the team became the first in NBA history to beat four 50-win teams in a single postseason en route to the championship. They also hold the honor of being the only defending champions from the great state of Texas.

Yeah, I just say it's a strange reason because that team perennially underachieves and has only one WS appearence to its credit, so the God-like status they've acclaimed in the town is beyond me.
They call the Houston clutch city because before the Rockets won their first le, they were called choke city...
Oilers, Stros, Rockets, Cougars(with Hakeem and Clyde)...all choked their asses off time and time again, and they really were called choke city...
When they were in the finals everyone thought they were in the process of choking to the Knicks, and they finally won a big game...then they released all these stupid shirts saying:

I guess the back to back champion Rockets, who really were sickeningly clutch, were natures way of making up for all the massive ing chokes Houston had before and after those teams.
No one watching Phi Slamma Jamma would have ever thought Hakeem was going to be the one to turn out to be clutch either....
Still, Houston calling itself ClutchCity is a serious(and hilarious) case of denial...choking 50 out of 52 times is only clutch to Houstonians...to everyone else it's reason to give up on sports.
IMO, Houston disgraced themselves permanently as a SportsCity when they lost their NFL Team, willingly...

Hey im not from Houston, nor have I ever lived there. I do visit a whole lot and have been a Astros fan since I was a kid. Baseball was my first love and its like any team you grow up with, you love them. Houston is a big baseball town even though we only have one WS apperence, we still love them and remain loyal. As for the oilers, well I wouldnt know I was never a oiler fan. I guess I really didnt answer your question, but there is no real answer, we stros fans love them and always will win or lose. Isnt this a basketball forum anyways?

"Choke City" was the headline in the paper after the Oilers lost to the Bills. Then when the Rockettes gave up 18 and 20 point leads to Phoenix in the playoffs, they used it again. It was a play on those headlines when the team won. The only reason the fans in Houston are bandwaggoners is because the media run so hot and cold with the teams.
BTW, the city of Houston was much better off letting the Oilers go.
I hate to say it now but im a Texans fan and they arent any better off then with the oilers. I think as a NFL city they are cursed.
Bud Adams is no longer in town. They are a thousand times better off. The Browns still stink, too.
The Indians, Braves, Cubs, etc.all are similar to the Astros in that regard, ecpet the Cubbies have not made it to the world Seires in a long, long time, but they still are treated like gods in many ways.
