This guy makes a very valid and objective point. It won't put the debate to rest, naturally, but the numbers are pretty solid and his claim that the Spurs have been rewarded by their consistency is entirely possible.

Champs get calls. It's a measure of respect from the referees. Duncan's Spurs, Shaq and Kobe, MJ's Bulls, Showtime Lakers, Bird Celtics, Bad Boy Pistons, they get the calls.
Yes, his methods are unassailable.![]()
Meh - even Simmons said the Spurs got all the calls... I feel better that I'm not alone.
Based on all on the literature that's not coming out of SA or Phoenix, I'd say the Spurs fans are the ones out on an island all by their lonesome selves claiming that "Timmy gets hacked all the time"
but he didn't say that the refs were BIASED for the spurs because he said he didn't even think the refs knew what the they were doing, too stupid to be biased....i loved simmons' page two today, especially this part:
Another reason why the officiating stood out in that game: Have you ever seen more players utterly convinced that they've never committed a foul in their lives than the guys from this Spurs-Suns series? What an annoying bunch of whiners; it's like watching the 2006 World Cup with more whistles. If that's what we get for having "the most international NBA playoff series of all time," then screw it -- let's make rules that no team can have more than three foreign players so we don't have to watch these guys and moan for two straight hours. For God's sake, Ginobili is at the point in his life where he could rear-end someone at a stoplight, then hop out of his car with his hands raised blaming the other driver for being in his way. Give it a rest, Manu. We're begging you.
and this part:
Duncan's eyeballs actually fly out of his head while he's reacting to a bad call.

I dunno ... to be fair, in Game 3 Duncan was actually raising his hand for fouls that weren't even his.

of course he was, he's hardly ever in foul trouble, it's natural that he'd do that if it will help another teammate out
Simmons is dead on about how valuable Duncan is. Simply put, in his prime, the Spurs are going to be there. If you're Dallas, you match up extremely well against San Antonio. Before you take apart this team and retool it to beat the Warriors, you need to keep in mind that you have a roster that can go toe to toe with Tim Duncan.
Yup, he is right about Duncan but it's not like that's ever been anything to question, his trade value. As for Dallas, I think some minor changes need to be made, particularly at the PG position but otherwise, most people are just overreacting about the Warriors/Mavs series.
22 personal fouls for San Antonio, 24 for Phoenix. That doesn't sound biased to me, especially given the Spurs were at home.
Who cares if they got all the calls. They got the win. That's all that matters.
But it's the calls they missed that they are talking about.![]()
Yeah, the officials didn't miss anything on the Suns. I mean, what, the Suns players got EVERY SINGLE FOUL called on them that should have been, and the officials missed 10+ on the Spurs? Because otherwise you're talking about something like an 8-6 difference on missed calls. Fine. The officials gave the Spurs the benefit on two blown calls. Most teams get MORE than that at home.
To think that it's that drastically lopsided when the calls are that close and BOTH sides admit there were blown calls is unrealistic at best.
And, must we mention that the Spurs have played this kind of defense all year? The Suns aren't used to being physical. They aren't practiced at it. They aren't used to playoff defense, and this is why they will likely never win a championship with Duncan & Co. around. If they DO get by the Spurs, the Jazz and Pistons are waiting on the other side of the fence. Do you Suns fans HONESTLY think that the next two series on your road to the le will be any easier, less gritty, or less physical?
It won't. If you beat the Spurs, you are going to be whining for the next 8-14 games about how every team in the league is dirty. Except you.
Except you must not have read this guy's article because the Spurs received the advantage +10 in blown/missed calls on the SUNS' HOME FLOOR.
Yeah but you keep missing the point - no team in the NBA has ever gotten screwed over by bad calls except for the Spurs, and anyone that says otherwise is a whiny bag.
welching?
nope. maybe read up a little more before asking something like that. g'day.
I forgot - I will go back to my place at the back of the line...
I forgot clean plays are marked by shots to the groin and body checking MVPs out of bounds.
We could experience quite some disappointing news tomorrow - Dirk getting the MVP sitting at home and Amare/Diaw suspended on technicalities.
It's almost as if Shaq/Charles were trying to convince the league to suspend those two guys...
I think it would be a travesty (not just as a Suns fan, but as an NBA) for two key players to be suspended in the pivotal game of the series.
Yeah, Dallas got exposed for a lack of interior scoring and not having a distributing point guard against the Warriors. But against San Antonio, Terry's outside shooting and Harris' ability to get into the lane are plusses. Diop and Dampier defend Duncan about as well as anybody. So if you're going to go out and get a new backcourt since you won't part with DD and you have to live with their lack of interior scoring against GS, which you don't happen to need against the Spurs, then you're going to have to make sure your new backcourt can match up with San Antonio as well.
I hear the Mavs are looking at Andre Miller. Dirk is at the cusp of being a franchise player. I hope we keep him and Howard. Diop and Harris are valuable against the Spurs and they both played well against Golden State, so I'm inclined to hang on to them as well. Anybody else is a commodity in my opinion.
Given that Golden State went something like 17-3 with everybody healthy after the trade, and that they'll probably win 50-55 next year if they bring everyone back, and Dallas rolled up 67 wins against half the league tanking for Oden, in time that will not be seen as big an upset as it is now. It was simply a bad matchup, personnel wise.
I don't know how people can say Dallas choked when they were never in control of the series. Outplayed, outcoached, outexecuted, for sure, absolutely, but choking is not what comes to mind,
