Knicks-Suns battle produces 21 fines - brawl between New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns players

Wallets belonging to several New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns were considerably lighter after the National Basketball Association levied a record $160,500 in fines and issued three suspensions after a bench-clearing brawl involving the two teams.

The NBA announced a record 21 fines in the brawl, which began when New York guard Doc Rivers and Phoenix Suns' guard Kevin Johnson got involved in first a shouting match, and then fisticuffs. Several players, including Knicks' injured point guard Greg Anthony, who was in civilian clothes, came off the bench and joined the melee.

Anthony, who is on the injured list, was suspended for "at least" five games, to begin as soon as he's able to play. He was also fined $20,500. His suspension will cost him at least $65,061 in salary. Johnson was suspended two games and fined $15,000, with $45,122 in lost salary. Rivers was suspended for two games and fined $10,000, with another $21,830 in lost salary.

Two other Knicks, John Starks and Anthony Mason, were fined $7,500, and another seven Knicks were fined $500 each. The team was fined $50,000.

Sun's forward Jerrod Mustaf was fined $10,500 and guard Danny Ainge $7,500. Seven other Suns were fined $500 each and the team was fined $25,000.

Neither Knicks' star Patrick Ewing nor Suns' star Charles Barkley were fined in the brawl.

So only the "Bandwagon" Suns fans don't know about the rule. This happened before they jumped on.

Stern also later added "I guess it's a shame that I have a rule that I have to enforce," although he also adds that in the decade that rule has been in effect, no owner has ever suggested a change.

Let's not forget Rudy T getting his face cracked as well.

The nice thing about this rule is there is no ambiguity, a player doesn't have to question what might happen to him if he leaves the bench, and even the best intentioned players can become a part of something such as Rudy T...

But we all know that the suns got involved only to restore peace.....or maybe they were just trying to check in and didn't realize that there was a brawl going on?

    Um...yeah?

I mean, only 5 seconds went by between the time Nash went down the point at which Stoudemire and Diaw realized that it had escalated and started to move away.

    5 seconds.

It's not inconceivable they they didn't realize that there was an "altercation" until it was too late. Diaw is clearly making a beeline to where Nash was lying on the floor. Stoudemire's intent is a lot iffier.

But I suppose it's just easier to label them "stupid".

It's a lot easier to label them "suspended". You can decide if they made wise decisions or not as you search for someone to blame.

I remember that brawl. I think that game was on TV, but maybe I just saw the highlights. Doc and KJ went after each other like dogs. I think it spilled onto the scorer's table.

I honestly don't see why there are so many Spurs fans being hard asses about this.

And I'm not searching for anything. Horry is the guy I blame. No one would be sitting if he could've held his wad.

    Aren't they?

They got suspended and now the NBA world is crying and the Suns are at a disadvantage for tonight's game. All this because they could not contain themselves. In my book, that is the definition of stupidity.

They were totally in the wrong.

    But idiots? No.

It was a knee-jerk reaction by two young players.

The rule is there to protect peacemakers from being mistaken as combatants as well.

And I wouldn't classify Diaw as stupid because he doesn't have a history of making an ass of himself as far as I know, but Stoudemire is a different story.

Are you Suns fans really saying that the league is wrong to expect adults who are getting paid millions of dollars to play a game to actually follow the rules and sit the down and shut the up? Is that so hard? The school system expects millions of kids to do it every day, and most of them comply.
