It is true, the Spurs have a new "dirty" reputation because of their physical style of play against the Suns but shouldn't Steve Nash shoulder some of the responsibility for recent events as well? After all, it was Nash who initiated knocking heads with Tony. The result was that poor little Stevie cut his nose and became a martyr.
Then it was Nash again who (illegally) encroached upon Bowen only to catch a knee in the cods. Bowen was fined and Nash got off scottsdale free.
Finally, Steve was checked by Big Shot, but does anyone really believe the shove was that hard? I submit that Nash flopped even down to the kicking of the scorers table. Sure, Robert pinned him but not nearly as violently as everyone has made it out to be. You see, Nash pushed the envelope on this deal for dramatic emphasis and wound up getting PUNKD by his own over-the-top antics. Horry had no way of knowing he would "rope" a couple of dopes in the process but Nash's melodrama ensured the Spurs advantage.

I think Robert Horry knew exactly what he was doing...I don't think he knew what the exact results would be, but I think he had a general idea what would happen, and I think he knew that the loss the Spurs just suffered was the baaaaaaaad kind of loss. It was the baaaaaaaaaad kind of loss.
Put it this way, he knew there was going to be a re-action to that action...Horry is not a dumbass, nor is he the first player to do something like that for the sole purpose of changing the battlefield. Dennis Rodman did it often... a lot of the old Pistons did.

I hear ya!! I've thought this all along. Horry's a vet who is familiar with every nuance of the game. , what does he have to lose? He's retiring soon...

He probably figured that, at the least it will take some wind out of Nash's sails...and figuered that could only be a good thing with the way he had just got done kicking our butts.
He went after Drob's nuts in one of the playoff games against LA..and he leveled Parker when Parker was a rookie(after we beat them in LA one game).
You know...intimidation can be a powerful thing, so can sending a message to your teamates about what it's going to take to win, and that's not something the Spurs are always in touch with...sometimes they are more in touch with they level of class with which they are playing.
Sometimes...a guy just needs to be knocked on his ass, every team we play does it to us...that's exactly what changed the series for Miami against the Mavs. It's what changed the series for LA with us in 04.
IMO, Phoenix was upping the physicality of the series when they signed Bell....and they knew it. Bell beats the out of players, he's not really that much like Bruce and is probably closer to Artest defensively. And he's taken a cheap shot on Manu before...when he played for Utah. He also tried to take Parker's head off when he was with the Mavs.
Anyway...when things are going bad, well some guys aren't content to just sit there and take it, Horry wasn't...this time. And that may be a message the Spurs needed to recieve...that may be a message they've always needed to recieve.

That's a fact. This "thug" image might just be the shot in the ass the Spurs have needed -- according to the media and the whiny Suns fans.

Yeah, Horry accomplished in one play what it took Mario Elie a season full of words to get across to the rest of the team.
If it were any other Spurs of all-time other than Horry, I would chalk it up to a stupid, reactionary foul. But with Horry, he's too smart for that. He knew exactly what he was doing.
Whether we should agree with the manner he took to send that message or whether it was ethical is a totally different matter.

I think the thing no one is saying about Nash, is that he is partly to blame for what happened.
Nash got fouled hard, no doubt. Again, it is no harder than I have seen these playoffs. The way Nash made it worse is his embellishment.
You can't really call it a flop, because he was going down regardless. Nash was on the ground for a good few moments before he decided to flail his arms up in the air like he was just shot. It was after he did that whole flailing motion that the guys came off the bench.
Therefore, if Nash would have just hopped up and gone to ice the game with his free throws, the only one suspended would have been Horry. As it is, he made a bigger deal out of it than it was, and 2 of his teammates got suspended as well, and now they are 1 game from elimination.

If Horry was sending the Spurs a message, how did it change the way they played in game 5?
I do think Nash's antics in early games helped escalate the perceived physicality of the series which probably heightened tensions and may have contributed to the end result of Amare and Diaw rushing to his rescue.
(And by antics I don't mean the bleeding nose, I mean - for one - the obvious and criminally underdiscussed overreaction to Bowen's knee touching his groin.)
When the Spurs play any more physical against the Suns than anyone else does that aren't complete pussies like the Lakers, wake me up and we'll discuss it.
I know deep inside Nash feels a little guilty of the way he flopped so much. I mean he laid down on the floor with arms up and everyhting, like he's been shot
