They've been labeled soft ... underachievers ... uncommitted. Now you can call them Western Conference champions.

David Robinson, Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs are in the NBA Finals for the first time since the franchise joined the league 23 years ago.

The Spurs continued to steamroll their way through the playoffs, sweeping the Portland Trail Blazers in the best-of-7 Western Conference finals with a 94-80 victory Sunday.

Afterward, Robinson spoke to his teammates behind closed doors in the locker room about the importance of playing for a championship.

"It means so much to him," said Tim Duncan. "He's worked so many years and this is the first time he's gotten there. What he said is that this is the best that he's felt with a team, looking at all the people on the floor that he knows he can count on."

San Antonio goes to the finals as one of the hottest playoff teams ever.

The Spurs won their 10th straight postseason game, one short of the league record. Since a shaky 6-8 start, San Antonio is 42-6, a record that even Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls would have admired.

"It's been 10 long years but it's just what I imagined it would be like," Robinson said. "You work so hard. It feels really good to finally get there."

Man, and people thought the Mavs had a dominant regular season?

If that team played as hard as it wanted through a full season, it would/could have beaten the 72-10 mark.

Sitting at home with fellow Spurs fans getting drunk and cheering so loud we got a noise complaint.

    So worth it.

David is a born leader... and the first time he got someone reliable to pass to, he brought back a championship!

Ok, Duncan is a bit better than "someone reliable to pass to" but his 'extra' skill covered the fact that the spurs' outside shooting was still suspect at the time.

(Wow.. look at those biceps! I need to hit the gym!)

I was bartending at Tejas in Victoria. The bar area was packed, and I had to work late so Emo came down to keep me company. I wasn't a Spurs (or basketball) fan at the time and was pretty annoyed because I wanted to go home.

Can you imagine if we got Tim when Dave was a little younger?

DRob was an athletic freak of nature.

anyone remember those "Memo to...." spots WOAI TV did during their playoff run that year? Some were subtle, some not, but they were great.

That whole May-June 1999 was a uva ride.

I was in a hotel room in Vicksburg, Mississippi. I had just graduated from college, totally prepared for life in 1972, and was on my way home to S.A.
