Here are the efficiency rankings to the end of November for all NBA players who have played this season.

    Efficiency is calculated by:
    (PTS + REB + AST + STL + BLK) - ((FGA - FGM) + (FTA - FTM) + TO)
Basically, it adds up the good things and subtracts most of the bad things. Personal fouls, technical fouls, ejections, and fighting fans in the stands are not included.

Rankings are indicated by the numbers in parentheses. The players are ordered by total efficiency, but you can see the rankings for efficiency/game and efficiency/minute.

The first table just shows the Spurs. The next table has all players:

if a player has a negative efficiency rating does that mean they should be paying fans to watch their play?

If Garnett keeps up these numbers, he'll be MVP again.

The Suns have 3 players in the top 15! Maybe Cuban should have paid Nash the money.

You should be in my public health classes I teach - you are a statistical and epidemiologist's dream.

Again, impressive. How about some similar stats on the top two other teams out West soon?

Very nice numbers. Good job, Spurster.

If Garnett keeps up these numbers, he'll be MVP again.
If the Spurs finish with a better record than the Wolves, Duncan will get more MVP votes.

    Book it.

Although that doesn't mean someone like Shaq, Kobe or LeBron won't win it.

Yeah... Garnett had the highest EFF rating in the league in 2003 too, but Duncan beat him because of the Spurs' success.

Regardless of Garnett's numbers unless they get their game together and really start winning he's not going to get too many votes.

More importantly, Slava's got a negative! Where's Medvedenko on this board when you need him?

The problem with this formula is that is says one block = one point = one rebound = one FG missed, etc.

This is just plain wrong. I think we can all agree that a guy who gets 10 rebounds a game is more valuable than a guy who gets 10 points a game. Similarly, all things being equal, a guy who gets 3 steals a game is probably more valuable than a guy who gets 3 assists a game (though on an absolute basis, 3 assists = 6 points, while 3 steals probably only equals about 2-3 points).

For these things to truly have meaning, they'd have to a) know what the actual "worth" of a blocked shot, a steal, a turnover, a missed shot, etc. was compared to a made basket, and b) normalize each player's stats to the league average and standard deviation.

Wrong Shooga. 3 steals is only 2-3 points?

I do know that not only does a steal lead to points because of an extra possesion but it also takes away possesions, taking away points. Its like an interception in the redzone, ran back for a touchdown. Technically the guy only scores 6 points but in reality its probably a 10-14 point swing.

Basketball is different than any other sport in awards. The MVP and Def player awards are built more on reputation than numbers it seems. Almost like a make up call. For anyone besides KG to win the MVP something has to happan. An injury, significantly below par numbers, etc... Its his to lose. Last year should have been KG's second trophy. The winds of change have shifted a while ago, TD is the second best player in the world.

Duncan's total measure is immeasurable except as the Philly announcer's were saying in his time in the league including playoffs win 72% team. They are checking as going back at least 20 years this is the highest do ented winning % in history according to them for any sport for a player on a team over more than 5 years.

Kind of reminds me of Montana = the sum of Duncan is more than ever appreciated = just gets it done. Perhaps, someday the world the will recognize him what he is the best big of all time period.

You have some data on that?

One thing I can absolutely guarantee, not every steal leads to points. Lots of times, steals lead to another steal back, or a turnover, or a missed shot which gives the ball back to the other team and negates the steal.

So 3 steals leading to 2-3 net points is probably not unreasonable. It certainly isn't going to be 6 points.

And I can't wait for the excuses from the Wuffies this year as to why the alleged "best player in the world" still hasn't won jack .

He is saying the touchdown is worth 6 pts. and even if 3 steals only leads to 3 points... that still takes away a possible 6 and a probable 3 points away from the other team, thus leading to his "Swing" theory. (in this case a 6 point swing)

I know what he is saying. But there's no proof of it. Just because you get a steal deosn't mean you're taking away sure points from the other team. If the steal wasn't made the possession could have ended up in a missed shot or another form of turnover.

The notion that "2 points = 4 point turnaround" can only be applied in specific incidents, like Tayshuan's block of Reggie Miller's sure layup. To indiscriminately apply it to every play is a sign of listening to way too many TV commentators.
